The work of an enslaved person is made apparent to Einar in episode 2 of Vinland Saga season 2, titled “Ketil’s farm.”
The episode begins with a very glorified idea of the life of an enslaved person shown by a master who is too kind for someone in this line of work. Einar gets the farm tour and an idea of what the job is from Thorfinn.
Upon being abused and bullied, put in his place by the retainers of the farm, Einar is in a rebellious mood and wants to report them to the master, but Thorfinn has had enough of conflict and fighting; he wants to go with whatever is being ordered.

Recap of Episode 2
As we return to the farm’s grassy fields, we see Einar and Thorfinn meet each other and begin working together as coworkers. They awkwardly exchange greetings as the master starts telling him his farm plans.
He offers them the opportunity to repurchase themselves, working until they make enough money that they were bought for and thus becoming free after. Einar is shocked and in disbelief that such a deal was being offered.
Thorfinn is asked to show Einar around since he must be exhausted from his journey. They walk through the forest together and talk of their pasts, and Thorfinn shows him the work he has done so far.
They begin cutting down the trees, and Einar needs help with the technique. Thorfinn shows him what to do, and a couple of people come through to where they’re working. Einar goes to introduce himself and gets his lunch.
A half-eaten loaf of bread is all they get, and Einar finally begins seeing the reality of slavery as they bully him into thanking them for feeding him. They start getting aggressive, but Thorfinn comes and breaks it up.
Einar is in a rebellious mood, but Thorfinn is too obedient, following through on every order and dragging the logs into the river. They power through the exhausting task and manage to complete it.
Einar also tries to gain Thorfinn’s anger, but he is all out of it; his self-will to rebel and fight is no longer. His eyes are empty and don’t have any more fire in them. Einar goes to report the happenings of the day, but the woman behind the master on the horse catches his eyes.
Left speechless as he stares after her, longing, Thorfinn taunts him as he notices what happened. The following day is one of joy and peace as the master urges more workers to clear the patches of land.
The master scrutinizes one of the workers for his inefficient technique in cutting the grass, and he is getting increasingly annoyed. The worker is revealed to be the master’s son Olmar, and he is fed up with all this scolding and leaves.
That night we see Olmar pledge that he will go to England soon, and he practices in the night with his sword. He attempts to slice a flying butterfly but fails miserably. The young master is sleeping with one of the peasant’s daughters, and their parents are overjoyed.
He storms off in anger as something has occurred between him and the woman, and on his way back home, he encounters some drunk farmers roaming around the field. Einar stays awake at night thinking about war and the invasion of his village in his childhood.
