Thorfinn and Canute clash through their philosophies in episode 22 of Vinland Saga season 2, titled “The King of Rebellion.”

Enduring a hundred punches from the beast of Canute’s army, Thorfinn manages to find himself in an audience with the King and recalls back to the memories of when he was just a shy Prince Canute. The boy has come a long way now and stands off against Thorfinn. 

With an ideology where he has no enemies, Thorfinn hates the meaningless bloodshed over the conflict between two individuals. Speaking to the King, he finds an explanation for his moves and the driving force behind all his actions, however ruthless they may be.

Thorfinn and Canute’s discussion has reached an extreme point where words may no longer be a choice. However, Thorfinn refuses to resort to violence to resolve such conflicts and he will unlikely begin attacking.

However, there is not much he can do now to counter the King’s explanation of a paradise under God. Likely, Canute will only accept his philosophy and be convinced of it in this short time, so the result of this argument may be meaningless.

Drott launches attacks that would kill anyone, but Thorfinn manages to stand on his two legs and take every single hit. However, he has a way of dispersing the impact of the attack, minimizing the damage, and refusing to use violence to solve anything.

Snake tries to interfere and protect Thorfinn, but the distraction causes him to slip up, and a direct attack lands with him flying unconscious. However, he has not given up on proving that this can still be solved without blades, and he insults Drott on his face coaxing the rest of the 100 punches.

The sun sets with Thorfinn standing straight after hundred punches and Drott gasping on his knees in exhaustion and even praising Thorfinn. Upon being asked why he didn’t strike back, Thorfinn explains his ideology, one of someone that has no enemies.

Einar tags along as they walk to the tent of the man who starts wars, and they pause upon the field of corpses. Moving on to stand in front of Canute, they reunite with memories of the past as they talk about four years ago and the day, he gave Canute the scar on his face.

Seeing Thorfinn as he is now, he realizes how much a man can change in four years. Thorfinn requests him to leave the farm as Canute explains his conflict, but he says he has already proven his point with killing a hundred of Ketil’s men.

Enraging even Einar, he calls Canute a thief than a man since he is trying to capture the farm. Thorfinn confronts his dream of turning the land into a paradise, and Canute explains his philosophy through the waves of the sea, something he is powerless to stop since God himself drives it. Humanity is the same, and such a paradise would be an act of rebellion against God himself.

Under God’s rule, humankind is not meant to find happiness and live in paradise, considering the despair they have already caused. However, he does not plan on letting it remain that way, uniting all the strength he possibly can. He wants to fight against God, unified with the wealth of all his people.

Canute asks Thorfinn what he plans on doing next, challenging his philosophy and asking if he intends to kill him since that is the only way to stop him.
