Olmar defines his form of bravery in episode 21 of Vinland Saga season 2 titled “Courage.”

As Ketil’s son walks through the aftermath of the war, an entire camp is seen full of highly injured soldiers. Begging for death, their cries go deep into Olmar’s psyche.

Before announcing their surrender, another messenger shows himself at Canute’s farm.

Merely a slave of Ketil’s, Thorfinn is refused by the guards and is eased into a duel with the strongest as they itch for more violence.

1. Episode 22 Speculation 

Thorfinn has taken the bet that he will last 100 hits from Drott, and if he wins, he will get to meet Canute face-to-face. No one bets on him, and rightfully so because of the extreme size difference. However, we all know that it will be Thorfinn’s victory due to his battle experience.

He will take a hundred hits and be in bad shape but will still stand strong enough to reunite with Canute. The meeting will likely go sideways since Canute is now fueled with the desire to attain more power, and violence has been his way of achieving it, a different philosophy from Thorfinn’s.

3. Recap of Episode 21

Canute lays out all the corpses of the bodies, almost entirely consisting of Ketil’s forces. Floki comes in and suggests that they enter the farm now that the enemy has retreated, but Canute firmly refuses since the warriors will soon start pillaging, which is not his intention.

The guilt of the massacre weighs on Canute in the form of his father’s voice, which tells him to keep killing as he does until he reaches the top. Burying Arnheid on the seaside, Einar pays his respects.

Olmar walks through the survivor’s camp, something arguably worse than the spread of corpses. Filled with people on the verge of death, most begging for their suffering to be put out rather than asking to live on. Seeing the aftereffects of war upsets his stomach, bringing him to his knees.

Snake tells Ketil and his wife that they have advised a surrender once more, but Thorgil has not given up on the fight yet. Ketil is hugely injured, and his successor Olmar is the one to decide. He has lost all will to fight; afraid to see more people die, he opts to surrender and stop this nightmare.

Thorgil continues trying to manipulate him in the name of courage, but he has gained the might to stand his ground against his brother and goes to Canute to announce his decision. Einar runs through the field after hearing Leif’s words on Thorfinn and where he’s going.

Approaching King Canute’s camps, Thorfinn has peacefully come to talk to the King himself but is being mocked by his underlings. He informs them of their past together, but the guard, Drott refuses to acknowledge him and is itching for a fight; his name eventually gets through to Canute, who is shocked but refuses to see him.

Even Floki can’t believe that Thorfinn could be here while he spars against Drott, who continues to try and punch his quick and nimble feet. The people begin betting on his loss, and Thorfinn joins in, saying that if he withstands 100 blows, he must be taken to speak to the King, a very amusing proposition they quickly agree to.
