What started as a war quickly turned into a massacre in episode 19 of Vinland Saga season 2 titled “The Battle of Ketil’s Farm.”

A force of naive peasants fueled purely by ego and the desire to clear their debts through fighting, as well as a Nordic passion for war, takes part in the battle against the king’s forces. However, the struggle was lost from the start due to an overwhelming difference in strength.

Thorgil and Olmar have washed up on the shore with their swords, ready to attack the king from the back, and their plan seems very plausible at the moment considering the lack of forces on the shore. Everybody is distracted by the war, and the assassination could be successful.

However, looking at it narratively, it is likely that Canute will survive the attack somehow since it is too soon for him to die. He is still only rising in the ranks and may identify the attack himself and be able to evade Thorgil’s attacks or be helped by one of the king’s guards.

3. Recap of Episode 19:

The army of Ketil’s farm has been gathered, a force of about 350, with only about a hundred having any experience in fighting. The only motivation to fight is that Ketil would cancel their debts if they win.

Thorfinn reunites with Leif and sits with Einar alongside Arnheid, who is in critical condition. He acknowledges how much Thorfinn has changed and that the look on his face has completely changed. Arnheid’s health condition is vital, and they have no clue if she will get better.

Meanwhile, Snake’s scouts notice the forces of the king sailing toward them. The king’s archers swiftly begin firing arrows from a far distance and even cut off a fair amount of their soldiers. Canute steps onto the shore and sends a messenger to Ketil’s forces.

Thorgil returns from his scouting and announces that they only have about 100 in force, and the army rejoices in celebration, saying that the battle is won due to their numbers.

However, Snake provides a much more accurate report of their hundred soldiers. The most trained and disciplined of the field, the king’s guard is one of the most powerful forces in all of Denmark. They also have the Jomsvikings in their squad, which settles their defeat.

Snake recommends his soldiers flee while they have the time since Ketil won’t understand their loss until they fight. However, as Snake reveals his backstory, they finally find out that Iron Fist was someone else entirely; Ketil was using their exact name to advantage, and after hearing his story, Snake’s soldiers’ group up with him.

Thorgil explains their formation to Olmar and asks him how they would attack, and even he understands that their forces are useless. His entire plan is merely to stall time and draw the king’s attention, and the battle finally begins with all the men charging to their deaths, which Thorfinn takes advantage of to move Arnheid out of the farm.

Arnheid sees a vision of her children and of Gardar, who drives the cart to a home of warmth. Exiting out of the vision, she wakes up and finally opens her eyes. Meanwhile, the frontline of Jomsvikings slaughters the peasants with ease slicing them in half.

However, Thorgil and Olmar swim to the shore amidst the massacre and take their positions right behind Canute. A plan that remained hidden from everyone else, an assassination is imminent.
