Recap of Episode 1
The episode begins with a visual of a blacksmith carving a weapon or tool of sorts and some brief scenes of a farmer, a Viking sailor, and of wars and their brutalities, the birth of life and its joys. Einar strikes an axe into the tree and is immediately made to stop by the woman of the house.
They, along with Einar’s sister, have food together as they discuss the reason for his training; he wants to protect this life and farm that they have. Their father’s death wasn’t in vain, as their life now is peaceful and happy.
It then cuts to a scene of destruction and pain as their entire lives are burnt away in front of their eyes. They sprint away and attempt to escape the invaders; Einar’s mom takes an arrow in the back and collapses.
There is no time to tend to her, and they’re forced to decide on the other catch-up. She grabs Einar by the collar and tells him to run and to live, at least for his sister’s sake.
The invaders catch up and taunt the two, mourning over the mother’s corpse. They grab Lotta and take her away, and Einar is powerless to stop them. She attacks them and tries to get away, but they kill her on the spot in retaliation.
They now take away Einar to sell him for beer money, as rage fills the young boy’s body and clouds everything in his mind; his life will never be the same again. He sits in the basement of a ship, along with other people in equally or worse states than him.
One woman is coughing severely, and they judge that she will not make it and immediately throw her overboard. Einar retaliates in anger and asks them why but is answered with a punch to the gut.
All of them are cleaned and checked for lice as well as for disease before being presented to the slave buyers. Einar runs for it in the middle of the presentation and hides away near some river banks.
He steals from some house and runs through the woods but is caught by the enslaver and beaten up thoroughly. He is made an example of in front of all the other enslaved people and is tortured even more through the night.
Now we see a familiar face at the slave presentation; Leif Ericson looks up at Einar in complete shock. He says that Einar looks neither blond nor petite; he is still looking for Thorfinn and expects to find him here.
He walks away from them as Einar envies Thorfinn, who has someone searching for him with such vigor. Another prospective buyer checks out Einar finds all his details, and decides to take him to his farm.
Upon reaching the farm, endless sights of beautiful wheat paddies lain in perfectly organized acres of land. It reminds him of his life at home, and Einar stands speechless as he walks toward his new life.
We finally see our protagonist enter the scene as Thorfinn walks out with an axe to greet the new addition to the farm.
