A journey of love and happiness that was derailed by the greed of man comes to a sorrowful end in episode 17 of Vinland Saga season 2, titled “The Road Home.”
With a beautiful wife, and an adorable menace of a child, Gardar lived the perfect life in his prime age as a father. He provided for them and stayed by their side throughout the journey, but the call of honor and wealth took him away from his family and never brought him back.

Snake throws multiple slashes at Thorfinn as he continues evading every slice without countering. Even the highly battle experienced Thorfinn finds that he is the fastest one he’s ever fought but manages to land a kick to the face regardless.
The sword he uses has a peculiar curve that he uses to his advantage, and Snake realizes from his fighting skills that his upbringing must have been one surrounded by monsters of insane capability that brought him to this level of skill.
Thorfinn manages to out-skill him with a flurry of attacks and almost deals a final blow but gets countered with a slice instead. Both of them gain an incredible amount of respect for the other in the battle, confused as to how someone so skilled Is lying on this farm, putting their talents to waste.
Snake skillfully changes his fighting strategy to make Thorfinn dodge away from Gardar and switches it around to find himself right next to Gardar, marking Thorfinn’s loss. As Arnheid and Thorfinn beg Snake to spare his life, he questions their logic; is the life of his five men worth that much less than Gardar’s?
Struck speechless by his words, Thorfinn and Arnheid cannot do anything as he stabs Gardar in the heart. He does not enjoy taking his life but does as he sees fair, but as he talks to Thorfinn, he is taken by a sudden attack from Gardar as he puts him in a chokehold.
Thorfinn runs and desperately tries to get Snake out of the choke but can barely even make him budge, but Arnheid’s words strike a chord somewhere in his brain. She assures him they have no more enemies and that Hjalti is waiting for them both, and Gardar drops Snake.
The blood spreads as his death steps closer and closer, but he doesn’t realize it in his delusion. Arnheid assures him they can now go home to Hjalti and take the cart together in the sunset. Gardar lies on the line between death and life as he sees his two lives side by side.
He remembers the days before the war, a happy family with Arnheid and Hjalti, as he could sit and watch their joy and laughter, taking part in their happiness. Then he recalls how everything changed, becoming a slave and ruining the lives of his family because of his greed for honor and money.
The cart stops as its rider falls to Arnheid’s lap, the light in his eyes extinguished, and the last sight being the day he made the worst decision of his life. The last day he saw Hjalti and the time he abandoned Arnheid and his family for something not even remotely as valuable.
In his final moments, Gardar sees a wishful dream of a future where Hjalti lives. One where he returns home and reunites with his child, taking him into his arms once more. But it still remains a wishful dream and nothing more.
