Thorfinn and Einar create an elaborate plan to save Gardar in episode 16 of Vinland Saga season 2 titled “Great Purpose.”

As a worried Einar runs to the help of Arnheid, he discovers the entire story of what happened the previous night that created such massive chaos on the farm. They decide to help her and stand against the farm’s retainers and Snake himself.

The plan starts smoothly, and everything seems to go according to plan, but they’re not the only ones with brains. Snake quickly smells something suspicious and catches wind of the actual situation, and turns the tables around.

1. Episode 17 Speculation: 

Snake stands against Thorfinn as he puts up his fists again for the first time in years. The one who has decided to be a pacifist and never hurt anyone again has returned to his fighting stance, however, without his daggers. 

The lack of daggers symbolizes that he no longer wants to kill but still assumes the stance to fight for something he considers just. Thorfinn does not take the side of a confirmed pacifist, nor does he continue his mindless rage like he used to.

This fight will be a spectacle to witness, especially considering Snake is a formidable opponent and probably the strongest without a doubt on the farm. However, Thorfinn is not without experience, and his restraint in killing might prove a hindrance.

3. Recap of Episode 16:

The retainers search through the shed early in the morning without telling Thorfinn and Einar anything, but Thorfinn quickly deduces that this would only make sense if Gardar escaped. There is no way Snake takes pity on him twice now, especially once his men have died.

Einar runs through the field to Arnheid to save her from Gardar but finds her reasonably working her errands just like any other day. The mercenaries keep a close eye on her, a bait set up just for Gardar to return for her.

Arnheid talks with Einar about how she helped him escape and bursts into tears as she recalls the incident and tells the two about the massacre. Thorfinn feels the eyes on his back and steps closer to Arnheid as she continues her story and the fact that she hid Gardar with the help of Sverkel.

She completely loses control of her tears; she helped him escape purely out of a wishful dream of everyday life with him, something she will never find once again. Gardar’s life is on a ticking clock as he continues bleeding, but they cannot move with their eyes on them.

Einar asks if she’s prepared to take the risk to get back her family and escape, and Thorfinn also catches on. She continues working out in the open as bait while Snake stays on guard, conversing with Sverkel as he talks of the misery of enslaved people, a situation forced onto them.

Sverkel asks Snake to throw away his sword, change his life and move away from the path he is trodding, even offering up his farm. However, he refuses the deal. Einar starts the plan as they distract the guards using his disguise and luring them out of the house.

Thorfinn finds the hidden Einar under the floorboards and finds him alive but in critical condition. Snake smells something suspicious and turns the horse around back to the house; Thorfinn loads an injured Gardar onto the cart but runs into Snake, catching him red-handed.

Snake immediately unsheathes his sword, preparing to kill and not planning to negotiate. Thorfinn prepares to fight once more, and a vision of Askeladd prepares to question his philosophies of a warrior once more, to remain a pacifist or raise his fists to help someone.

He counters the slash of a sword and charges back as they both stand facing each other; Thorfinn realizes he quickly needs to decide if he has any hope of winning and takes his iconic fighting stance. However, he no longer holds his daggers in his hands.
