A tragic story of the destruction of a family is revealed by Arnheid in episode 14 of Vinland Saga season 2, titled “Freedom.”

As Gardar stops in his tracks at the sight of his wife, Arnheid, he attempts to take her back home. However, she is frightened seeing the state of the man she once loved and knew to be a calm and loving husband but is now consumed by the violence surrounding his life.

Snake, however, has a very one-track mind as he easily carries out his duties, takes out the runaway slave without any further damage, and keeps him in captivity while giving out information to Kjallakr and those involved.

1. Episode 15 Speculation: 

With the reveal of Arnheid’s backstory, the story gets more profound as she tries and figures out her next action step concerning Gardar. She stepped out in the night to tend to his wounds. However, he is being held captive, and the plan will likely go astray.

Snake or his henchmen may guard the place and will likely notice Arnheid. However, the action they take against her could go either way since she is both a slave that is meant to be punished if disobedient and someone the farm is protecting. 

Gardar is injured at the moment and cannot fight at full strength, which is why Snake so easily restrains him. However, this may not last for long, and the sight of Arnheid could quickly produce enough adrenaline for him to break out once more as he did on Kjallakr’s farm.

3. Recap of Episode 14:

Gardar stops at the sight of Arnheid and calmly begins trotting toward her. However, she cannot respond to one of his questions and stands frozen at the question about Hjalti. 

He extends an arm for Arnheid to return home with, but Snake interferes and threatens his life if she takes his hand. He says that Gardar is here to kidnap her and commands his soldiers to protect her with their lives. 

Einar concludes that Snake is keeping Arnheid from being free and holding her from her husband and immediately takes an axe and goes to attack but is held back by Thorfinn, who tries to get him back to reason, and thus sits powerless.

Snake praises Thorfinn for keeping a cool head and acting smart, moves into battle with Gardar, and swiftly dodges all his blows while holding a conversation. He notices his injury in his movements, swiftly strikes his weak spot, and brings him down.

Gardar is dragged away while screaming for Arnheid, Snake coolly walks away, and Arnheid cries on the side of the road. The night that day is filled with an uneasy silence as Einar sits and ponders his options. He suggests he go and free Gardar under the guise of at night, but Arnheid doesn’t want him to get involved.

Seeing Einar’s reaction, she decides to tell them about her past. Living in a village in Sweden, the family of three lived in a deep forest that was frequently an area of conflict over control of the mines. Gardar was involved in the fight, something she protested over, but her opinion was overthrown.

Several weeks passed, and a fleet of ships arrived at their homes. However, it was not their husbands but the enemies who attacked the women and children while they were unguarded, kidnapped everyone in the village, and burnt down their homes.

The trauma has completely changed Gardar, imbuing the violence directly into him. However, now she has another duty, to protect the child that she is currently bearing, one of Ketil’s. She is sure that on this farm, she will be able to raise the child normally and peacefully, away from the storm of Gardar, and asks Einar not to escalate the situation.

However, after everyone has gone to sleep, she tries to sneak out and help Gardar’s wounds but is stopped by Sverkel, who talks of his past. One where he also tries to let the storm pass, but the plan has backfired, leaving everything in shambles and more people dead for no reason. Arnheid walks out to tend to her husband and no longer plans on waiting for the storm to pass.
