Thorfinn finally comes to terms with himself in episode 9 of Vinland Saga season 2, titled “Oath.”
As he lies knocked out on the farm, Thorfinn finds himself in a grassy field of peace, where he meets his father. However, it is not a place for a gruesome murderer to be, as he finds himself dragged down into a pit by the corpses of his past.
Mistaking it for Valhalla, a vast pit fueled by pure war and violence filled with “warriors” who only fought for the sake of killing, Thorfinn hangs above it all and meets a familiar face.

3. Recap of Episode 9:
Thorfinn wakes up in another dream in a peaceful plain filled with calm and serenity, and he immediately assumes that his actual life was just a dream, relieved that all the trauma he went through was merely an illusion.
Meanwhile, Einar continues fighting even on an empty tank while Thorfinn lies knocked out beneath him. Fueled purely by the rage he built up after seeing his farm ravaged, he intimidates the retainers to the point of leaving them alone.
Thorfinn continues relaxing in his vision as Thors walks up the path and approaches his son, who is relieved to see him. But as Thorfinn gets up and goes to Thors, he’s stopped by a silently enraged Thors; he asks him who he has killed.
The vision immediately goes into a dark place, filled with the stench of blood and corpses lying on the battlefield as Thorfinn remembers his life of bloodshed and Thors standing above him, apologizing for leaving him alone and forcing him into this path.
He tells his son that he no longer has any enemies; no one in this world is ok to hurt. As Thorfinn listens to his father’s words, he is again dragged down by the corpses of those he has murdered and begins falling into a vast pit.
He recognizes the place as Valhalla, where the warriors who have perished go and continue fighting for eternity. Bjorn and Askeladd participate in their battles in Valhalla, as Thorfinn merely hangs above them, watching. Askeladd drinks and mocks Thorfinn for thinking this is the afterlife.
The afterlife is a much more excellent place than this hellhole he hangs over, and this is merely where all the warriors go after death. Askeladd asks him to remember his past of violence, where he was also one of a warrior’s mind, assuming everyone was his enemy.
However, he’s changed since then and become empty, for better or worse. Thorfinn denies it, saying he still has violence in his heart since he struck someone in a fit of rage earlier. As he begins losing his grip, his feet are prodded by the corpses he murdered.
He knows nothing about his victims, their lives, or their families; he merely sought to kill. But now that he realizes what he’s done, he apologizes to all his victims, but they continue trying to pull him down to the pit and bring him back to who he was.
Askeladd sees this and realizes how much of a change he’s gone through, and he jumps down into the pit and strikes them down. Screaming at Thorfinn to climb out, to fight his actual battle and to make sure that he wins, never to come back there again and climb, he does.
Thorfinn wakes back up on the farm, realizes his dream, and sees an unconscious Einar in front of him, who immediately tells him they won. As they limp back to the shelter, they laugh about the whole situation, but Thorfinn can’t get his mind over the dream.
He finally starts feeling the regret of killing so many people he didn’t even know the names of. However, he does not mope for long, and he swears never to strike another again, fight his actual battle, and follow his father’s path in life.
Pater finds evidence of the retainers ravaging the farm and clears Thorfinn and Einar of any blame for the fight that happened, and the two continue working on the farm with a new mindset in hand.
