I. Reaching a New Land
Thorfinn leaves one of his five ships in Markland and sends three for transport of people and supplies between Greenland and Vinland. Thereby, he has only one ship left for himself.
Using Arneid’s village as the base, Thorfinn and his crew proceed with their setting. Bug Eyes helps them to navigate through the scary sea, and leads them to dry land.
Bug Eyes is an expert in things related to the sea, thanks to the long years he spent sailing. He can tell from the irregular tides that this is a huge island.
II. Thorfinn’s War-hating Ideology
After analyzing the situation, Eyvar proposes to Thorfinn that they should build another ship to prepare for a possible conflict. He claims that he can make an entire ship with one carpenter and one worker within six months.
Thorfinn immediately turns down the idea; he believes that they should focus more on cultivating their land. However, Eyvar insists that such a carefree attitude may leave them defenceless before the Indigenous forces.
Thorfinn tries to explain his war-hating ideology, but it wasn’t enough to calm Eyvar down. I think Eyvar does have a point since Thorfinn is carrying the lives of his crewmates on his back, and furthermore, it’s a leader’s job to prepare for everything.
III. Canute, the King who Hates War
He then gives King Canute’s example to justify his ideology. He knows Canute from his early days when he was just a scared boy hiding behind Ragnar.
Now, the scared boy has become the King and is forced to fight wars and slaughter races against his wish.
This is Thorfinn’s way of explaining what a curse war can be. He hopes that there’s no such war-hungry warrior in this newfound island.
