5. Recap of Chapter 179
Thorfinn and his crew finally land somewhere between Markland and Helluland but the tired Iceland and Greenland farmers seem hesitant to travel further.
The farmers decide to settle in Markland and start farming amongst the thick forests and trees. Einar is quite skeptical and refuses to let the people stay in Markland but Thorfinn agrees to their terms.
Thorfinn instructs 13 settlers to remain in Markland with two boats and livestock. He explains to Einar that those people settling in Markland would be an advantage towards their voyage as they can make a trade base in Markland for other settlers.
He also explains that if any disease is spread among the settlers, it is less likely that all of them will be infected if they split up.
Agreeing to Thorfinn’s words the two parties split up and Thorfinn, with the bigger crew, sails towards Vinland. Upon reaching a vast green field of land they find a small Nordic house and rejoice thinking they have finally found Vinland.
While others are celebrating, Thorfinn quietly observes some arrows and realizes they are made of stone. They realize that the arrows are owned by native Vinlanders and predicts their hostility.
Seeing the situation, Thorfinn decides not to settle in Vinland and instructs his crew to find a place further south of Vinland.
They set sail once again to find a safe place to settle on.
