5. Recap of Chapter 177
The ships are being loaded with supplies back in Leif’s Farm and Thorfinn and his crew gear up for their journey. Einar gets advice from a pirate on how to maintain a ship’s health and bond over the conversation.
Meanwhile, Gudrid chats with Tulla sharing her experience of travelling the East. Tulla feels Gudrid is indeed happier than before and smiles at the girl before her.
Otto greets Gudrid and meets Thorfinn, her husband. Thorfinn asks Otto to join them on their quest but Otto refuses stating she has to take care of the family and wants to grow wheat on the land. Thorfinn tells him to join them once he is ready, promising that they can grow wheat together.
Otto feels Thorfinn’s kind nature and believes his sister truly loves a kind hearted man. We also see Gudrid’s pure heart and love for Thorfinn as she gloats over her husband calling him handsome.
Later, a pirate ship arrives carrying a tied up Bug Eyes. They inform them that they have come to take money Bug-Eyes had while gambling. The people are shocked to know Bug-Eyes owed those pirates about 33 pounds of Gold.
The chapter takes a comedic turn as, falling 2 pounds short, Bug-Eyes’s father plans to sell his son when Thorfinn comes to rescue and pays the remaining two.
While Bug-Eyes vows to sail to Vinland to make it a debt-free country, the audience questions his sudden loss of money. Bug-Eyes explains that he had 40 pounds saved under Frejya’s bed. But she took off with the money.
Everyone blames Frejya and calls her a thief but Bug-Eyes is in denial of the fact that Frejya broke his heart. He thinks or more likely still wants to believe that she took the money and ran off to prevent the pirates from getting their hands on it.
Finally, the Vinland settlers sail off on their journey to the west with Bug-Eyes enthusiastically cheering for the trip on the front lines of one of the ships.
