Video Reveals How Space Jam 2 Brought The Looney Tunes To Life In 3D

After almost 30 years, Warner Bros. has finally brought back the Looney Tunes characters for another intense basketball game. The long-awaited sequel for the classic Space Jam movie is almost here.

The sequel is title Space Jam: A New Legacy, and this time it stars LeBron James.

The official Twitter account for the film (@spacejammovie) has dropped a behind-the-scenes video of the film. The video gives us a glimpse of the detailed animation process involved in the highly anticipated sequel of the 1996 film.

The Space Jam sequel has stunning visuals that required hundreds of artists to bring 2D cartoons to life to play a basketball game.

The video features James, alongside filmmaker Malcolm D. Lee and producer Ryan Coogler, discussing his experience and the film’s animations. Animation production designer Devin Crane said they wanted to make the film “as hand-crafted as possible.”

Crane also explained how a single scene could take almost a year to create with much attention to detail to make the Tune Squad 3D and make them come alive. Even though production began in 2019, the sequel had been in the making since 2014.

The sequel will follow a fictionalized version of James as he attempts to reconnect with his son Dom. The father-son duo finds themselves stuck in a virtual reality ruled by a humanoid AI-G Rhythm and his Goon Squad, made up of actual NBA and WNBA superstars.

And it’s down to James and his son to compete with the Tune Squad against the Goon Squad in a game that will decide the fate of the Looney Tunes and his family. The Tune Squad includes Bugs Bunny, Lola Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Foghorn Leghorn, Tweety, Taz, Sylvester, Wile E. Coyote, Yosemite Sam, Speedy Gonzales, Granny, Marvin the Martian, and the rest of the crew.

There have been rumors that the film could feature a Michael Jordan cameo. This would be a perfect way to link the two films together. The first film revolves around Jordan being abducted by Bugs Bunny from the Looney Tunes group and asked to play a match to defeat the Nerdlucks, a criminal alien group led by Mister Swackhammer.

Space Jam: A New Legacy will premiere in theaters and on HBO Max on July 16.

About Space Jam: A New Legacy (Space Jam 2)

Space Jam: A New Legacy (also known as Space Jam 2) is an upcoming American live-action/animated sports comedy film directed by Malcolm D. Lee, from a screenplay by Juel Taylor, Tony Rettenmaier, Keenan Coogler, and Terence Nance.

The film is a sequel to Space Jam (1996) and stars basketball player LeBron James, as well as Don Cheadle, Khris Davis, Sonequa Martin-Green, and Cedric Joe. The film also features the Looney Tunes characters such as Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Marvin the Martian, Pepé Le Pew, Tweety, Sylvester, Foghorn Leghorn, Porky Pig, and Lola Bunny.

Like the previous hybrid films, it will be a combination of live-action and traditional hand drawn 2D animation with some CGI effects

Basketball champion and global icon LeBron James and his young son Dom (Cedric Joe) – who dreams of being a video game developer rather than follow his father’s footsteps – find themselves trapped in Serververse, a virtual space ruled by a rogue A.I. named Al-G Rhythm (Don Cheadle).

LeBron must save his son and get them home safe by leading Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Lola Bunny and the whole gang of notoriously undisciplined Looney Tunes to win a basketball match against Al-G’s digitized champions on the court, the Goon Squad.
