The first official trailer for Venom: Let There Be Carnage teased the advent of yet another eminent Marvel symbiote, Toxin. Venom: Let There Be Carnage is an upcoming sequel to 2018’s Spider-Man spinoff movie Venom.
The trailer primarily introduces Woody Harrelson’s Cletus Kasady and his transformation into Carnage. Tom Hardy will return as Eddie Brock in the movie, as the host for the titular symbiote Venom.
While fans are praising the first look of the movie’s auxiliary villain Carnage, the appearance of Stephen Graham’s troubled cop can be easy to miss. But don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.
IGN confirmed with Sony Pictures that the actor is indeed playing Detective Patrick Mulligan in the film. For those unaware, Patrick is the first host of the symbiote Toxin from Marvel comics.
Toxin is Carnage’s symbiote offspring. It is the thousandth symbiote to procreate from Venom and Carnage’s genetic bloodline. He is extremely powerful and highly unstable. Thus, Carnage hoped to eliminate the symbiote as soon as it was spawned.
Carnage hid Toxin by binding it to Mulligan. And then, he planned to kill both the host and the symbiote. But Venom swore to protect it, in order to raise Toxin to fight alongside him. But things didn’t work out so well.
Venom realized in due time that Toxin was a potential threat to the predecessors of the bloodline. Venom then allied with Carnage to destroy Toxin. But Spider-Man showed up to assist Toxin in this fight.
Mulligan, initially uneasy with all this, later comes to terms with Toxin’s existence. That is, until he is killed by evil Blackheart.
During one time, Flash Thompson was the host for symbiote Venom. And this is when Eddie Brock was unwillingly bonded to Toxin. We can expect this plot twist in the future installments of the franchise.
There were also other Easter eggs which were spotted in the trailer. One scene saw Patrick Mulligan reading The Daily Bugle newspaper, which is prominent in Spider-Man’s Marvel universe. A headline mentioning The Avengers was also noticed.
These could all be attempts, trying to tie the knots between Sony’s Marvel universe and the MCU. Should we possibly expect an unpredictable entry of Tom Holland?
Well, you can see it for yourself when the movie releases on September 24, 2021. Can’t wait!
