Even before its dual-episode premiere on HBO Max this week, Velma, a Scooby-Doo spinoff, was pounded with a severe dose of toxic review bombing. The story faced some backlash, but the show became the most-watched animated Max Original premiere, even with generally average reviews.
And now, despite the backlash it received, we believe the show has also scored a possible season 2 renewal. According to the Entertainment Identifier Registry (EIDR), Warner Bros. and HBO Max are already working on Velma season 2. The Registry shows season 2 is already in the works and will consist of 11 episodes, possibly coming out this year.
Season 2’s renewal comes right after the news of the animated series scoring the highest views of any animated HBO Max original. Neither HBO Max nor the show’s cast or crew have confirmed the news yet.
Mindy Kaling, who serves as a writer and executive producer and even voices the titular character, has already given her own answer to the unwarranted backlash the show has faced. But the show still holds a low rating, below 10% from viewers and only an average of 53% from critics.
Most critics have agreed the humor and adult content is satisfactory, with room for improvement. But the show has acquired the wrong type of attention from the audiences for its choice to portray Velma as of Asian descent. The viewers have bombed the reviews with complaints of wrongful cultural representation and forceful sexualization.
Though wrongly blamed, the show is still in its early stages, and only time will tell how early reviews will change as the show progresses. Season 1 will continue airing until the first week of February, with two episodes coming out weekly.
We’ll wait for an official confirmation and keep you posted on the renewal of the Scooby-Doo spinoff series.
