It’s been a year of delays, and not just for game titles. Steam’s upcoming handheld, the Steam Deck, has also been hit with a delay, which is unfortunate given that most of the feedback from testers and studios has been overwhelmingly positive. The device has the potential to start the next generation of handheld gaming.
Valve is making all the right moves recently, like holding a Q&A session for the developers to provide answers to questions and provide further details about the device. Fans are undoubtedly disappointed that they will have to wait a while longer for the device to release, but we now have a new set of images revealing the packaging it will be shipped in.
This glimpse comes to us from a new blog post on Steam, where Valve revealed the finalized box of the Steam Deck. The post mentions that the packaging is designed for when the device is shipped to developers but will also be what consumers will get in February.
The package design is pretty minimal; an almost blank brown foldable box that could be used for anything from the Steam Deck to a water cooler. No hint was given if there is a cardboard sleeve that will go over the box for display purposes, so many fans may find this look quite bland and unexciting.
The blog says that the company has recently completed a Design Validation (DV) which will be used for additional testing. Valve has also stated that it wasn’t interested in Steam Deck exclusive titles, further solidifying the speculation that the handheld will be a mobile PC that will offer users all the benefits users currently enjoy with a regular PC.
While the wait for the Steam Deck isn’t too long, some fans hoped they would have the handheld by Christmas. The reasons for the delay are supply issues, a problem the tech industry has been facing for a while now.
Footage of games running on the Steam Deck have been doing the rounds, and many have been impressed with the visuals and frame rates. It’s looking like the Steam Deck will be an impressive piece of hardware, and February can’t come sooner.
