Explore Ancient Norse Frost Caves in the New Valheim Update

Valheim was released last year and was a smash hit with Steam users. The Early Access game ranked at the top of Steam charts for multiple consecutive weeks. However, a slow update schedule lessened the hype around the game. That doesn’t mean the title didn’t get new content, and the latest update is now available for players to enjoy. 

The most notable feature of the newest Valheim update is the inclusion of the Frost Caves dungeon biome, which opens a great degree of options for both veteran players and newbies. However, while it may be the most prominent feature, the new frost caves are not the only addition to this update. 

The Frost Caves are located in the game’s Mountains biome, and they are packed with dangerous encounters, top-end loot, and potential progression options for interested players. One of the main enemies featured during the update’s public test branch was the werewolf-like Fenring creatures. The devs have also stated that players will encounter cultists, called the Ulv, Stone Golems, and other threats. 

According to a blog post from the developers, there is a major new base defense event involving one of the all-new creatures, though players will have to find the specifics of this event on their own. The Frost Caves update is, in fact, the update initially named Cult of the Wolf, which could be seen in the game’s earliest official roadmaps. The blog explains that the update was renamed along the way, and the devs were using this opportunity to clear up any confusion. 

There are several quality-of-life backend features included in the update as well, such as full controller support, performance optimizations, and the ability to pause the game while in single-player. 

This update has a fair bit to sink your teeth into, and we can expect the schedule to be much smoother now. The next update planned is to the “flora and fauna,” so maybe we will have new creatures to hunt.
