Unless you’ve been living under some sort of figurative (or even literal) rock, you’ve heard about the Norse-themed survival adventure Valheim. And be it some of the most successful games on the planet or a “World-destroying Bug”, nothing is stopping the game on its way to the top.
After revealing a promising new roadmap for updates and DLCs, Valheim has now crossed the half a million concurrent users mark and replaced Dota 2 as the second-most played game on Steam. Its peak of 502,000 players isn’t more than Dota’s peak today, but it does still place just behind the reigning king, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.
Being inspired by games like Skyrim and Zelda: Breath of the Wild, the five-person team at Iron Gate AB did not expect a hit of this scale.
“We had a feeling that it would sell pretty well, at least to sustain us, you know.”
Henrik Törnqvist
Henrik Törnqvist, co-founder at Iron Gate, said in an interview with PCGamer.
“But it being a million seller, and now two million seller, is something we could never have guessed. It’s quite incredible, and very humbling also, I might add.”
Henrik Törnqvist
The game’s old-school single-player style with its RPG-like feel has probably been a big contributor to the game’s success. Its added subversion of popular survival game tropes like those to do with crafting and construction have also kept players hooked for hours.
