In Valheim, potions can be the difference between being alive and dying out in the wilderness. Potions and Meads should be the items to make after you have figured out the basic tools and items in Valheim.
In Valheim, you need to survive in an unknown environment that can be very punishing. Potions are going to be your friends. They perform various tasks from restoring your health to giving resistance against the cold. The catch is that they are not found in the wild but you have to make them yourselves.
1. How to Start Making Potions and Meads in Valheim?
Potions and Meads are made in the fermenter from a mead base which is prepared in cauldron in Valheim. Before starting to make potions or meads you need to have the fermenter, a cauldron and a suitable mead base.
Thus, you can’t directly jump onto making potions. You need to build a fermenter first.
2. How to Build a Fermenter in Valheim?
In Valheim, you can build a Fermenter using a Wood Hammer and the following items:
- 30x Fine Wood
- 5x Bronze
- 10x Resin
Crafting the wood hammer is easy as you just need 3x Wood and 2x Stone. Next, you need to get bronze from smelting copper and tin in the forge. For the uninitiated, copper and tin ores are found in the Black Forest biome.
Use the bronze to craft a bronze axe as it’s needed to cut down the birch and oak trees, the only trees that give out fine wood.
At last, gather the resins from trees of the Black Forest biome or alternatively kill Greylings and Greydwarfs. I prefer chopping down trees for my organic produce. Once you have all the ingredients, craft the fermenter from the craft menu. Be sure to have it sheltered too!
The fermenter on itself won’t do anything. We need to prepare a mead base in order to get a potion.
3. Using the Fermenter: Making a Mead Base in Valheim
Prepare a mead base using the following items in the Cauldron (made from 10x Tin) in Valheim.
Mead/ Potion Base | Ingredients |
Minor Healing | 10x Honey 5x Blueberries 10x Raspberries 1x Dandelion |
Medium Healing | 10x Honey 4x Blood Bags 10x Raspberries 1x Dandelion |
Minor Stamina | 10x Honey 10x Raspberries 10x Yellow Mushroom |
Medium Stamina | 10x Honey 10x Cloudberries 10x Yellow Mushroom |
Frost Resistance | 10x Honey 5x Thistle 2x Blood Bags 1x Grey Dwarf Eye |
Poison Resistance | 10x Honey 5x Thistle 10x Coal 1x Neck Tail |
Tasty (Stamina) | 10x Honey 10x Raspberries 5x Blueberries |
Honey and Blood bags are two prominent ingredients. Bees are found in the beehives found across the meadows. You can also get the queen bee to make your own bee hives. Blood bags on the other hand are dropped from the waterborne leeches in the Swamp biome.
4. Putting it All Together: Making Potions and Meads in Valheim
To finally get the potion, put the mead base in the fermenter and wait a few in-game days for the potion to fully brew.
There are different kinds of potions in Valheim and each of them has a different property. Here’s the list of the potions in Valheim as of now:
Potion/ Mead | Effect |
Minor Healing Potion | Restores 50 Health (2 Minute Cooldown) |
Medium Healing Potion | Restores 75 Health (2 Minute Cooldown) |
Minor Stamina Potion | Restores 50 Stamina (2 Minute Cooldown) |
Medium Stamina Potion | Restores 160 Stamina (2 Minute Cooldown) |
Frost Resistance Mead | 10 Minutes Resistance from The Frost in the Mountain Biome |
Poison Resistance Mead | 10 Minutes Resistance from Poisons |
Tasty (Stamina) Mead | 300% Stamina Regen -50% Health Regen (10 Seconds Duration) |
That’s it! You are now a master but beware, you have to use the potions and meads wisely.
