Kirie, Shuichi, and the remaining survivors eventually discovered the source of the curse—the spiral ruins at the village’s center. These ancient structures had been controlling the fate of Kurouzu village for centuries. It was only now that they decided to erase the village.

Despite their efforts to escape, Kirie’s brother, Mitsuo, succumbs to the curse, transforming into a snail. With their hearts hardened, Kirie forced the group to continue their desperate journey.

As they head deeper into the heart of the village, Kirie and Shuichi are drawn into the spiral ruins, where Shuichi reveals the curse’s sinister history. Imbued with evil, the ruins will have consumed villages for centuries, only to fall dormant afterward.

In a tragic final moment, Kirie chooses to stay with Shuichi as the spiral ruins closed around them, sealing their fate and bringing the destruction of Kurouzu village to a harrowing end. The horror persists and almost jumps out and grasps the viewer.

Uzumaki is a horror manga series by Junji Itou. It was serialized in the Big Comic Spirits manga 1998-1999. An anime production is scheduled for fall 2022.

The story starts in a small town, Kurouzu-cho. This eerie town gives birth to a spiral curse that makes people paranoid about spirals and gradually leads them to their deaths.

Kirie and Shuichi plan their escape from the town and its curse, but it is tougher than they expected.
