Uzumaki episode 2 doesn’t miss a beat after the stunning premiere that shook horror anime fans worldwide. The Junji Ito work continues while delivering another unsettling chapter that leaves you spiraling.

While the first episode had already set the bar for horror anime to the very peak, this episode (although not explosive) builds the dread with a slow, creeping tension, making everyday elements like snails and hair feel terrifying.

There is a chance that you will have a spiral phobia when you are done watching.

Junji Ito is an expert at weaving bullying into horror, and most of his stories deal with the normal intertwining with the supernatural. The connection of dark parts of society, like bullying and suicide, with true darkness, is Ito’s claim to fame.

A disturbing scene follows where the bully, Tsumura, becomes a snail, leading to a grotesque confrontation. Watching these once-human figures grotesquely twist into madness forces us to consider the risk to our sanity as the audience.

Kirie’s identity is thrown into chaos when her hair begins to spiral. The beautiful Kirie, like all young girls, is conscious of her hair and wishes for it to be beautiful and long to attract others’ gazes.

It all goes to the madhouse when her hair comes to life. As Kirie battles to keep the spirals from consuming her, we witness the horrifying physical toll it takes on her.

The visual of Kirie’s spiraling hair is haunting, showcasing how even mundane and personal things can devour you in the town plagued by the Uzumaki.

4. What to expect in Episode 3?

Chilling Transformations

We can expect the next episode to explore even more grotesque and unsettling transformations. With half the adaptation covered, expect the remaining episodes to delve into the increasingly bizarre effects of the spirals on the town’s inhabitants. The finale will see our protagonists running away to escape the spiraling horror.

The current Uzumaki adaptation is a worthy continuation of the terrifying premiere. It brings Junji Ito’s twisted vision to life. The black and white anime visuals are deeply unsettling and take away the ‘life’ aspect that anime usually has with their bright and vibrant colors.

This makes the anime one of Junji Ito’s best represented works and feels way closer to reality than it should. With each episode, the spirals in Kurôzu Town grow more ominous and the horror seems more and more inescapable.
