A new surprise drops as September brings an announcement from Adult Swim. The official trailer for the Uzamaki anime dropped and the premiere is slated for September 28, 2024. It looks like Halloween has come early for all the horror anime fans.
The anime Uzumaki is based on the manga of the same name by Junji Ito. The genre is considered to be the epitome of horror manga. Junji Ito has made masterpieces like Tomie and Gyo, and stories like Smashed, Shiver etc.
1. What happens in the Uzumaki trailer?
Uzumaki, the great king of horror, dropped a trailer ahead of its release in late September (on Toonami). The theme will continue to reflect the manga, so the white and black on the panels will be carried on to the animation.
The trailer begins with the female protagonist going around the town, and we see that many people are fascinated by spirals, giving it an eerie touch. The trailer soon shows that spirals are not normal and hold the key to something much more powerful and somewhat Lovecraftian.
The trailer has many horrific scenes, with the spirals being used for magic, people turning into snails, their heads turning into rotating meat grinders, and entire cyclones swallowing up people. In the end, we see that the female lead herself gets sucked into the cyclone spiral.
We can glean many other things; the male lead (whom we consider a vital character) has a father who is weirdly obsessed with spirals. In the end, we can grasp the hint that all of the strange and horrific things that happen, including the people of the village crying for blood, are limited to the village.
This is because the male lead wants to get out of the city to escape the madness. The most iconic scene of Uzumaki is at the top of this article, with the girl taking off her hat to show a massive spiral in her head that swallows her eyeball.
The famous manga has been serialized into anime and will be completed in just 4 episodes streaming on Adult Swim’s Toonami on September 28, 2024, and the next day on MAX.
2. What is Uzumaki all about?
The story revolves around Shuuichi Saitou, the main lead MC. The characters’ voice actors were also revealed, with Shinichiro Miki voicing Shuuichi (Bleach fame Urahara) and Uki Satake voicing Kirie Goshima (Mob Psycho 100 fame Tsubomi-chan).
As a special surprise, the author, Junji Ito, will be voicing one of the characters. But which character is still unknown and will only be revealed along with the release of the show.
This tale, told by the main characters, Shuuichi and Kirie, is about their boredom in their village, Kurouzu-cho. But as the strange obsession with spiral spirals (yes, I am hilarious) into something beyond the control of anyone, it is time to escape the village and its horrors.
Many Junji ito horror manga enthusiasts were anxious to know if the anime could keep up with the sheer eerieness and the uncomfortable feel the manga created in its readers. The trailer stands as a true testament that Uzumaki could very well top the list of horror anime very soon.
The monochrome texture shows the creator’s dedication to staying true to its manga panel roots, the flow of the story, and the CGI. With the animation itself being worthy of admiration, the horror of Uzumaki as an anime may exceed the original.
But until September 28, we can only wait and ponder. It is not that long a wait, so all of you horror fans out there – Happy Halloween!
