Over the past few months, most of the world has been put under lockdown due to the COVID 19 pandemic.
The world of anime and manga is no exception; workplaces of many production houses are being shut down, causing delays in release schedules. However, the creators of Uzumaki announced that their production schedule was not affected.
Recently, the official Twitter account of Uzumaki’s anime released storyboards of the upcoming anime. They showed that they are working with the same style that Junji Ito, the manga’s creator, used.
The original Uzumaki manga was released in 1998 and ran for a total of three volumes. This terrifying tale shows us the events that happen in a small town cursed with spirals.
This 19-chapter long manga was nominated for an Eisner Award in the category of “Best U.S. Edition of Foreign Material” in 2003. The Young Adult Library Services Association chose the first volume for its list of the “Top 10 Great Graphic Novels for Teens” in 2009. The manga was also included on its list of the 53 “Great Graphic Novels for Teens.“
Directed by Hiroshi Nagahama and animated by Production IG, Uzumaki’s anime will premiere sometime in 2020.
About Uzumaki
Uzumaki is a seinen horror manga series written and illustrated by Junji Ito. Appearing as a serial in the weekly manga magazine Big Comic Spirits from 1998 to 1999, the chapters were compiled into three bound volumes by Shogakukan and published from August 1998 to September 1999.
The story follows supernatural events occurring in the fictional town of Kurouzu-Cho. This eerie town seems to be affected by a curse that involves spirals.
The readers are shown the events of this town through the eyes of a high-school teenager, Kirie Goshima, and her boyfriend, Shuichi Saito. This dark-fantasy themed story will send a chill down your spine with a concept as simple as spirals.
