In anticipation of the national release of Godzilla vs. Kong on March 31, fans across the United States have booked over 10,000 private watch parties at local theaters.
The highly anticipated battle of the Titans will see the last six years of MonsterVerse stories amalgamate in a legendary duel. Godzilla, who has appeared in both 2014’s Godzilla and 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters, will go up against Kong, introduced in Kong: Skull Island.
The film has already broken records in the international market for being a blockbuster during the pandemic. All eyes are now set on how it performs at the US box office over the Easter weekend. Luckily, Godzilla vs. Kong is releasing at a time when there are more screens available than ever before and a majority of people are vaccinated as well.
In the US, the film is playing on more than 3,000 screens starting Wednesday and 6,000 screens by the weekend—yet another pandemic record. With Warner Bros. telling The Hollywood Reporter that fans have booked over 10,000 private screenings of Godzilla vs. Kong, it seems like most of those screens will be for private showings.
The private screening, aka watch party trend, saw its inception during the pandemic. When theaters began to reopen their doors, many production houses had delayed their latest releases, in the hopes of when the market picks back up. So the theatre owners resorted to enticing moviegoers by offering private showings of classic movies. The new releases are now costing just a little bit more.
The recently released Wonder Woman 1984 also touched the 10,000-mark for private screenings. We now know for sure that despite both films releasing on HBO Max, fans are still interested in the big-screen experience.
