2. Episode 9 Speculation

As a result of the hyperspace, Ataru and Lum are now fixated on finding a future that works for them both. Inaba is trying to convince the group that an ideal reality is difficult to find, considering the number of futures. Regardless, both Ataru and Lum are incredibly stubborn.

Moreover, Shinobu is struggling with her bad luck with men. Therefore, Shinobu is also trying to find a future where she has a fitting husband who is not Ataru. Mendo is also a recurring character in all the futures, bullying Ataru as usual.

Ataru and Lum likely won’t find a future that will suit them both and become depressed. However, Inaba can create a new door and is willing to do so for Shinobu. Inaba’s feelings for Shinobu are one-sided, which may create more drama within the group.

Shinobu comes to Sakura’s clinic, saying she must be cursed only to meet weird guys. Sakura assures her that she still has the rest of her life to meet the perfect guy. While walking through the street, Shinobu meets a cute blonde guy asking for food.

The man, Inaba, is wearing a bunny costume and eats one of her carrots. Shinobu punches Inaba away after he tries to ask her out, and he drops a key before disappearing. Inaba is questioned about the “key of fortune” in the other dimension.

The other bunnies take comfort because no average person could ever use that key’s power. However, Lum easily creates a door with which the key opens into hyperspace. Shinobu enters another dimension that looks like their town but in the future.

Shinobu sees herself in the future with a child that looks like Ataru. Inaba runs into Shinobu in the future dimension and introduces himself. Meanwhile, Ataru and Lum find Sakura and Tsubaume’s future relationship and try to spy on them.

Mendo visits the Moroboshi house to fire Ataru by himself, but the old Ataru traps him. Lum finds her future self-married to Rei and is extremely unhappy. The other bunnies capture Ataru, Lum, and Shinobu and discuss their fate.

The bunnies give the group some tea and pastries before trying to kill them all. Inaba gets targeted after they do, and Shinobu rescues him along with Ataru and Lum. Inaba says that the future can be changed by creating a new door and leads Shinobu into hyperspace.

Ataru and Lum explore the other futures to find one that suits them both. In the new future, Ran and Rei are married as they expected. However, Mendo is married to Lum, with Ataru as a lowly servant. The group runs through multiple futures, desperate to find one that fits them all.

Urusei Yatsura is a manga series by Rumiko Takahashi. It has a total of 374 chapters and was published from 1978 to 1987. Its anime adaptation received 195 episodes from 1981 to 1986. A new anime adaptation with selected stories began airing in October 2022.

In the series, a humanoid alien race invades the Earth but agrees that if the protagonist wins in a game of tag, they will leave it unharmed. Ataru wins against the alien girl, Lum.

Lum misunderstands and thinks Ataru is proposing marriage, and starts living with him and joins his high school. Ataru is a trouble magnet and gets stuck in weird situations pretty often.
