It looks like Guerilla won’t rest until Horizon Forbidden West is the epitome of perfection. When the title was released back in February, it wasn’t perfect but still managed to capture the heart of the gaming community.
Guerilla could have rested on its laurels, but that isn’t how it operates. Consequently, Aloy’s world has received countless updates so far, where some introduced much-desired additions like New Game Plus to the title while others sought to iron out visual and performance issues.
The most recent update, Patch 1.16, belongs to the latter’s side as it aims to fix the visual and performance problems that have accompanied Aloy since her arrival on our screens.
After the arrival of Patch 1.15, many Horizon Forbidden West players reported a persistent stumbling block in 60 FPS mode that gave the game’s objects and foliage a shimmery look. This resulted in many enthusiasts opting to play the game in 30 FPS on PS5.
While Patch 1.07 did try to enhance the image quality, it couldn’t handle the issues related to the 60 FPS performance mode. However, as it turns out, Guerilla’s hard work finally paid off because the second attempt to resolve this pesky issue proved to be more successful than its previous efforts.
Guerrilla Senior Principal Tech Programmer Giliam de Carpentier claimed that with the use of a new AA technique, the developer was able to get rid of the bothersome shimmering effects. This, in turn, improved the game’s 60 FPS mode on the PlayStation.
“In the new AA mode, the world is still rendered using the same alternating checkerboard pattern, but now uses a different way to reuse historic data: the old system only used the current and previous raw render as input for the AA to complete a native 1800p output in two frames, while the new system uses the current raw render and the previous AA output as input for the AA of the new frame. ”
While the improved 60 FPS mode looks stunning, it comes at the cost of 4K quality mode, as many enthusiasts are reporting a lack of visual precision which means that 4K isn’t looking as well as it used to.
With Guerilla working on adding VRR support along with a new 40 FPS mode that aims to merge the quality of 4K with the swiftness of the 60 FPS Performance Mode to Forbidden West, the future updates will likely take care of the existing issues.
