The Uncharted video games have finally found their way to the silver screen! Story-wise, the film does suffer from some criticisms but overall, it has been a box office success. This has also prompted the possibility of Uncharted 2.
One important character in Nate’s life (and possibly the sequel) is Sam, who surprisingly is missing on-screen.
Sam Drake is Nate’s older brother. The two orphans were estranged when they were kids but keep in touch via postcards as adults. During his quest for Magellan’s treasures, Nate believes Sam to be first missing and then dead according to Sully’s account of events.
So what actually happened Sam, and more importantly, is he really dead? Here’s everything you need to know about Sam Drake in Uncharted:
Sam Drake in Uncharted (Movie)
Sam Drake is Nate’s older brother, who also instilled in him the delights of treasure hunting. They both grew up in an orphanage but Sam noticeably started getting interested in wayward activities.
One of these involved enlisting young Nate’s help to try and steal the first map made from the Magellan expedition, which would lead them to a huge treasure. As expected, both the kids get caught by the museum guard and Sam is later thrown out of the orphanage due to this incident.
Sam does not meet Nate in person over the years (or at least the movie depicts it so) but keeps in touch via postcards.
15 years later when Sully meets Nate, he states that he used to partner with Sam on many treasure hunts (where they had with moderate success) but vanished after he tried to find Elcano’s diary.
There is nothing more revealed about Sam’s own adventures or his time growing up after the orphanage.
Is Sam still alive?
In the second half of the movie, Sully reveals to Nate that his older brother was shot dead while he was trying to recover Elcano’s diary. This is a point of tension, since Sully kind of manipulated Nate into helping him by initially keeping alive the hope of finding his brother.
Still, due to the camaraderie they’ve built, Nate decides to keep working with Sully.
In a bid to get the Uncharted franchise rolling, the movie has a post-credits scene that hints at the possibility of Uncharted 2. More than that, however, it brings up a character we presumed to be dead: Sam.
In Uncharted’s post-credits scene, Sam is shown to be in alive prison after surviving the gunshot. He is writing more postcards to Nate talking about all the adventures he’s yet to have and being cautious about who he teams up with.
We don’t know how Sam survived or how he ended up in prison. This will for sure come into play when Sony decides to make the second movie.
Sam Drake in Uncharted (Video games)
The post-credits scene reveal is quite similar to the videogame Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. One big difference is that Nate, Sam, and their then-partner, Rafe Adler intentionally get locked up in prison to find a clue. When Sam falls from a height during their prison break, Adler convinces Nate that his brother is dead.
While Adler had notorious intentions and kept Sam’s true fate a secret, I don’t think Sully in the film actually knows Sam was still alive after being shot. He is more like a mentor and father figure to Nate, and although he did lie to him, I don’t think he’d betray Nate to the extent that Adler does.
In what way will Sam reunite with Nate in the movies? Guess we’ll have to wait for Uncharted 2 to find out!
