Netflix’s superhero series The Umbrella Academy is adapted from Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá’s graphic novel series of the same name and follows the journey of an extraordinary family of adopted heroes on a mission to stop impending apocalypses to save humanity.
The Hargreeves siblings travelled to 1963 in the last season, narrowly averting another apocalypse. While the siblings believed they’d got things right and returned to their own time, the Season 3 trailer of The Umbrella Academy shows how wrong their belief has turned out.
The new season follows the cliffhanger ending of Season 2 where the titular group finally return home from 1963, only to discover that their efforts to halt the incoming apocalypse have caused another loop in time, essentially leading to the formation of the Sparrow Academy.
As the group is pitted against the Sparrows led by the previously-dead Been Hargreeves, they also discover the existence of a destructive entity that has been causing havoc in the universe and might be their fault.
Upon realizing that their time travel adventure has created a time paradox, Five suspects that parts of reality are now being “swallowed”. In his view, the Umbrellas’ interference with time has triggered a “kugelblitz.” When Viktor asks about it, Number Five responds, “Essentially, we’re screwed.”
This new apocalypse, the kugelblitz, is the result of all six siblings arriving in a timeline that isn’t their own, tearing apart the fabric of space-time. According to Five, the apocalypse will consume everything in under a week.
Can the Hargreeves siblings stop this new self-created threat before it’s too late? More importantly, can they stop the kugelblitz without creating another new apocalypse?
