Ubisoft is steaming forward with as many as 10 Assassin’s Creed titles currently in the pipeline, scheduled for a release sometime in the next three years. As a result, they have to phase out quite a few of their online/multiplayer services to make way for the future.
On the official website, Ubisoft has mentioned that they will decommission the online services of several titles for different platforms on January 25th, 2024. Several classic Assassin’s Creed titles like AC: II on Xbox 360, Brotherhood on MAC, Liberation HD on PS3 and Xbox 360, and Revelations on PC will be amongst the labels to be discontinued.
The other titles to be discontinued are Ghost Recon Future Soldier, Heroes of Might and Magic VI, NCSI, R.U.S.E, and Trials Evolution on PC. Splinter Cell: Conviction will be decommissioned from the Xbox 360.
While this might not go down well with many Ubisoft fans, they have said that decommissioning online services for online games is a “necessity as the technology behind these services becomes outdated.”
What being decommissioned means is that players will not be able to play multiplayer, link Ubisoft accounts in-game, or use online features in any form whatsoever. Ubisoft also clarified that Ubisoft Connect rewards will also be unavailable.
It might be disheartening for the OG fans of the Assassin’s Creed franchise. But the decommissioning was long overdue.
However, all is not lost. Players can continue to play the campaign mode, assassinate enemies in the old Assassin’s Creed style, and access all offline features.
This seems to be a positive step forward, given that Ubisoft Bordeaux has delivered big time with their latest title, Assassin’s Creed Mirage, which provides a genuinely back-to-the-roots experience for fans who are looking for stealth and parkour mechanics with revamped graphics.
The decommissioning date of January 25th ensures players can play online through the holiday season. We will soon know how this move goes down amongst the Ubisoft fans.
