Minato’s journey shows its fruits in every draw of the bowstring as Kazemai fight their hardest to overcome Kirisaki in the final tournament. Fighting against uneven odds, a team that rose from nothing shows the ikiai they’ve achieved over months of working together.

Minato remembers his childhood of being obsessed with kyudo under the mentorship of Saionji and his decision to pursue Kirisaki and follow in his mother’s footsteps. The club gathers for a group meal with some of the members of Tsujimine.

Masaki gives them a prep talk before their next big match. The audience also starts speculating who’ll win between Kazemai and Kirisaki, with most placing their bets on Kirisaki. 

Each team member is prepared to put their soul and heart into the bow this match, as it means a lot to them both. Even Saionji-sensei shows up to witness the effort of the students she taught as the two teams draw their bows and take their shots.

The scoreboard rallies the points as the pressure gets to some of them while our protagonists continue holding their stance and nailing every shot. A flashback to their childhood shows the unique friendship between Minato and Shu.

Kirisaki is at a disadvantage by one point, but a certain click between all the team members makes them perform to the best of their ability and land every single shot in one of the final rounds. Kazemai also manages to hold their end and shoot as one.

Masaki continues to root for Kazemai as Saionji tries and gets him to struggle between picking a side, but as a sensei, he only wants them to shoot to the best of their ability. Both teams reach a draw and enter a sudden death round which will decide the fate of this match.

As the ikiai within their hearts finally begins coming to fruition, Minato is hyperfocused on the target and does not falter as he shoots one after the other, matching Kirisaki’s points perfectly, as beautiful arrows hit their mark one after the other.

The field is filled to the brim with the spirit of their players, and a genuine love of kyudo is being put into every single shot taken, none missing their mark. The end, however, goes in Shu’s favor as a final miss by Minato decides the game.

Masaki praises their effort in the match. However, they are not disappointed nor upset but just brought to the realization of how much further they can grow and learn about kyudo. The tournament ends with Kirisaki’s win, and they take the cup home.

Tsurune is a light novel by Kotoko Ayano which was adapted into an anime series by Kyoto Animation in 2018. As of 2022, three volumes have been published under Kyoto Animation’s KA Esuma Bunko imprint.

The plot revolves around Minato, a high schooler who has grown up loving archery but developed a sudden target panic. Yet, he is recruited into an archery club in high school and along with his team and instructor finds the true meaning behind his passion.
