‘Medalist’ is an award-winning sports manga that is centered around figure skating – a form of ice skating that involves acrobatic dance moves. The manga also sheds light on a teacher-student duo and their dreams and aspirations.
While the teacher Tsukasa ended up being an ice-dancer and accepted it because he ‘started too late’, he could not let it happen to his student Inori. Inori is a fifth grader who is also told that she started too late and will not be able to catch up.
On Thursday, Kadokawa announced that the ‘Medalist’ manga will be adapted for television anime. An official website and Twitter account were opened, revealing the first visual for the series. Some of the staff members were also revealed.
In the visual above, we get the first look at Inori’s design for the anime. The character is shown dancing on the ice floor.
The main staff members who would work on the ‘Medalist’ anime are as follows:
Position | Staff | Other Works |
Director | Yasutaka Yamamoto | Noblesse |
Series Composition, Screenplay | Jukki Hanada | Granbelm |
Character Design | Chinatsu Kameyama | In Another World With My Smartphone |
Animation Production | Studio ENGI | Kantai Collection: Let’s Meet at Sea |
Tsurumaikada, the creator of the manga also shared an illustration to celebrate the announcement of the series.
‘Medalist’ is quite young, as it was launched in May 2020 in Kodansha’s Afternoon magazine. However, in its three-year run, it has received several accolades, including top rankings, nominations, and two awards. This includes the 68th Shogakukan Manga Awards in 2023.
Figure skating looks like something fresh in this genre and the circumstances of Tsukasa and Inori will inspire a lot of people who dream big. Fans are not excited about ENGI producing it, so adapting and delivering the anime properly will be important for them.
