Tron 3 Finally Starts Filming after a Barrage of Frustrating Delays

After facing a barrage of delays and setbacks, the filming for Tron: Ares has officially started. 

The franchise’s third film will be a sequel to 2010’s Tron: Legacy. Although it was supposed to start filming right after Tron: Legacy’s release, the production faced several delays before being scrapped by Disney in 2015. 

However, the project got a fresh life in 2017 with Jared Leto coming on board. Unfortunately, the constant delays kept coming due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.

Now, director Joachim Ronning has finally confirmed that Tron 3 has finally started filming with his new Instagram post. Check it out below: 

The picture features a stylized Tron 3 logo behind the director’s chair. Moreover, the caption states, ‘WEEK 1 ON THE GRID‘, which confirms the start of filming.

Despite performing moderately at the box office, 1982’s Tron is regarded as a cult classic and praised for its brilliant visual effects and storytelling. 

Therefore, expectations were high when news of a sequel started floating around in 2005. However, Tron: Legacy failed to impress critics despite earning heftily at the box office. 

Despite the lukewarm reception of Tron: Legacy, Disney still had faith in Joseph Kosinski’s vision for a third Tron movie, which was supposed to be called Tron: Ascension. It would have been a thrilling “invasion movie” where the Grid’s characters would invade the real world, with Olivia Wilde and Garrett Hedlund returning. 

Unfortunately, Disney pulled the plug on the project before it could start shooting in 2015.

Therefore, it comes as a relief to fans that the threequel is finally in production after so many setbacks. The film is predicted to release in December 2025, which will be 43 years after the first film’s release. 

Fans are expecting to get something really special from juggernauts like Ronning and Leto to finally quench their thirst.
