DreamWorks Animation’s Trolls 3 has a release date set for November 17, 2023.
This is the first announcement that Universal has made regarding the threequel, and unlike its predecessor, the film will get an exclusive theatrical release.
It shouldn’t come as a surprise, considering the franchise has been one of Universal’s most popular titles when it comes to kids/family-friendly musical movies.
The 2nd film, Trolls World Tour, was a massive hit even when it came out in 2020 amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Universal opted to release the film on premium VOD (PVOD), and it earned over $100 million in the first weeks itself.
With cinemas opening up again, an exclusive theatrical release seems like a better choice for Universal. Trolls 3 will get an exclusive theatrical release for 17 days before it goes to streaming.
After all, the first installment in the Trolls franchise earned around $350 million at the global box office when it came out in 2016.
Universal had initially set September 22, 2023, as the release date for an “untitled animated movie.” Not much has been revealed about the film’s plot, and it is not yet known who among the original cast will return.
The first film was directed by Mike Mitchell and Walt Dohrn, with Dohrn alone returning for the sequel. Dohrn’s return hasn’t been confirmed either.
A holiday special, titled Trolls Holiday in Harmony, will premiere on NBC this Friday on November 26. The special will feature the voices of Anna Kendrick, Justin Timberlake, and most of the cast of Trolls World Tour.
Logline for the special reads,
As the holidays near, Queen Poppy plans the First Annual Trolls Kingdom Secret Holiday Gift Swap. But things take an unexpected turn when she and Branch draw each other’s name.
Meanwhile, Tiny Diamond comes down with a bad case of writers’ block, trying to think of a special holiday rap for his dad.
Besides the feature films and the holiday special, you can check out Trolls: Trollstopia and Trolls: The Beat Goes On!, which are available to stream on Peacock/Hulu and Netflix, respectively.
