Fans of the Naughty Dog’s Uncharted video games will have a chance of experiencing a “prequel” in the upcoming movie adaption. The first trailer reveals Tom Holland and Mark Walberg’s dynamics as the mentor-mentee duo, Nathan “Nate” Drake and Victor “Sully” Sullivan.
In the first game, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, Nate and Sully’s relationship has already been established. In the movie, we go back in time to understand how the two meet and get to a part of their very first adventure together.
As Nate is a lot younger in the movie than in the games, it is also a viable explanation for why Holland was chosen over Nathan Fillion, Chris Pratt, and even Walberg.
Given Nate’s interest in history and treasure hunting, Sully proposes to join him in looking for a treasure mapped out by Ferdinand Magellan. The trailer brings up another video game element of Nate’s missing brother, who had gone off exploring the same mission.
This seems to provide an emotional hook as Nate is not just tempted to discover the treasure but also the possibility of knowing what happened to his brother.
In the video games, Nate is also supposedly the heir of the English explorer, Sir Francis Drake. While no direct mentions are made to this legacy, Nate is seen wearing the signature Sic Parvis Magna ring in the trailer.
With adventures, come allies and enemies alike. Sophia Ali comes in as Chloe Frazer, who was introduced in the second Uncharted video game. Although she seems to be on Team Nate and Sully, she is known to be impulsive, devious, and prone to double-crossing.
The big baddie, on the other hand, will be played by Antonio Banderas, who is also on the hunt for the Magellan treasure. Tatti Gabriel has also been roped in to play Braddock, whose role, like the Banderas’ yet unnamed villain, is largely unknown.
Directed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, Venom), Uncharted will be out in theatres on February 18, 2022.
