A24 releases a not-so-subtle teaser of Denzel Washington’s character committing murder in Tragedy of Macbeth.
The Shakespearean tale is known to all: Scottish general Macbeth kills King Duncan of Scotland after being tempted by three witches’ prophecies and encouragement from his wife. Macbeth believes himself to have rightful control over the throne, and fueled by equal parts of ambition, insecurity, and invincibility, he goes down a path of corruption and murder.
The same is chronicled in Tragedy of Macbeth, directed by Oscar-winning writer and director Joel Coen.
Washington commands the role of Macbeth, joined by Frances McDormand as Lady Macbeth, Corey Hawkins as Macduff, Brendan Gleeson King Duncan, Harry Melling as Malcolm, and Kathryn Hunter as the witches.
The newest teaser takes us right to Macbeth’s first descent into quiet madness, showing us how he stabs his king to death:
This, in fact, is quite a significant scene in the entire play. So, it is pretty surprising that the film decided to reveal it in a teaser.
I can’t help but admit how the scene (and the whole movie, I’m sure) has been rendered to be sinister and gothic, capturing the psyche that has been tainted by ravenous power.
To this effect, the movie has been shot entirely in black and white, using sound stages. The dialogues in the film are also recited as per the original verses.
This is just one of the many teaser trailers that the film has released. Another of my favorites is the one that voices the line, “Something wicked this way comes.”
The audience is already super thrilled with the trailers, rallying for the movie to win Best Picture at the Academy Awards. Critics join this praise after viewing it at the 2021 New York Film Festival.
Currently, Tragedy of Macbeth sits at a 98% critics approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Although the film was supposed to have an exclusive theatrical release, it has now opted for a limited one on December 25. It will then go to streaming on Apple TV+ on January 14.
