Tow Ubukata’s ‘Bye Bye, Earth’ Fantasy Novel Gets Anime

Crunchyroll has revealed that Tow Ubakata’s action-fantasy novel Bye, Bye Earth will be receiving an anime adaptation. The anime will be produced jointly by Crunchyroll, WOWOW, and Sony Pictures.

The anime will stream on the WOWOW subscription television channel in Japan and on Crunchyroll in over 200 countries worldwide. There has been no information about the anime’s staff or release.

The novel’s story takes place on a version of Earth where all people can take on the form of animals. The novel’s protagonist Bell is the only girl in the world without the characteristics of animals and she sets out in search of other beings like her.

In her search, Bell wields a sword and becomes involved with the struggles between the cities and the outside world.

Tow Ubaka’s Bye, Bye Earth novel was originally published in December 2000 by Kadokawa Shoten and featured illustrations by Yoshitaka Amano. It was released in two-parts in a tankouban format. 

The novel later had a four-volume release from 2007-2008 featuring art from Hyung-Tae Kim. A manga adaptation by Ryu Asahi was serialized in Young King Ours magazine from 2019 to 2022, with four volumes released in Japan to date.

Ubakata’s previous novels such as Mardock Scramble have also inspired anime and manga adaptations, and Ubakata has even written scripts for anime films like Ghost in The Shell Arise, Heroic Age, Fafner, and Human Lost.

Additional details about Bye, Bye Earth’s air date and cast are yet to be revealed.
