U.A. High School is without a doubt the top hero school in Japan in My Hero Academia. Since our protagonist Midoriya idolizes All Might; naturally, he wanted to follow in All Might’s footsteps by going to U.A.
Although we’ve spent the entire series with U.A., it isn’t the only school in the country with young and talented aspiring heroes. And the Provisional Hero License Exam was the perfect opportunity to introduce us to them!
New characters with new, unique quirks– this arc was a breath of fresh air and a chance to compare students from other rival schools with U.A.!
The entire arc helped put the actual strength of U.A. students into perspective. It exposed the weaknesses of top students like Todoroki and Bakugo while also introducing us to other students just as talented like Yoarashi.
All things considered, here are 20 of the strongest students in the series ranked:
20 Momo Yaoyorozu
Quirk – Creation
Yaoyorozu is one of Class A’s students that got in through recommendations. Using her quirk ‘Creation’, she can create almost any object as long as she knows its atomic structure.
Yaoyorozu’s creations depend on her body’s reserves of lipids and take time to materialize– frequently testing her decision making. However, she has often risen to the occasion, particularly against Aizawa during the final exam and the fight against Saiko Intelli from Seiai during the Provisional Hero License Exam.
19 Tenya Iida
Quirk – Engine
Iida is one of Class A’s top students. He’s constantly driven by a strong sense of righteousness and wanting to live up to his brother’s legacy.
Iida’s quirk ‘Engine’ manifests on his calves. It gives him increased speed, agility and power in his legs. Besides his quirk, Iida is also level-headed and can think on his feet during crucial moments.
Iida’s quick thinking during the evacuation in Chapter 13 got him the position of Class Representative. He was also the reason his team managed to draw against Class B during the joint training in what was otherwise a losing battle.
18 Togaru Kamakiri
Quirk – Razor Sharp
Kamakiri is one of Class B’s underrated students. Despite not getting a chance to display his full potential even during the joint training, the few glimpses of his quirk have been impressive.
Kamakiri’s quirk ‘Razor Sharp’ lets him produce blades of different shapes and sizes from any part of his body. During the joint training, Kamakiri was able to slice up a huge metal pipe. His quirk is absolutely deadly in a close-range fight, and anybody who gets too close is sure to get sliced up.
17 Manga Fukidashi
Quirk – Comic
During the Joint Training Arc, Manga’s performance was so spectacular it’s a mystery how he didn’t stand out earlier in the series.
Manga Fukidashi’s quirk ‘Comic’ lets him materialize onomatopoeias or words that describe sounds. Manga can create these words just by speaking them, and they are almost indestructible. Not even Aoyama’s Navel Laser could break through them during the joint training.
Besides offense, Manga can even use his quirk to enhance his allies’ abilities.
16 Tetsutetsu Tetsutetsu
Quirk – Steel
Tetsutetsu is quite literally Class B’s ‘man of steel’. Tetsutetsu’s quirk ‘Steel’ turns his skin into impenetrable steel. The strength of his quirk and how long he can use it depends on his iron intake.
Tetsutetsu has pulled off feats like going head to head with Kirishima and Todoroki. Using his quirk, he withstood the hottest of Todoroki’s flames during the joint training. He also knocked out a villain with a single punch during the Forest Training Arc even though he was close to passing out from gas poisoning.
15 Nirengeki Shoda
Quirk – Twin Impact
Shoda is another one of Class B’s underrated gems. Like the name suggests, Shoda’s quirk ‘Twin Impact’ doubles the impact of his attacks– only the second attack is several times stronger than the first.
Shoda’s quirk can also enhance his teammates’ attacks. His combination attack with Yanagi and Kodai during the joint training was a sight to behold.
14 Jurota Shishida
Quirk – Beast
Shishida’s physical prowess really took me by surprise in Season 5. Shishida’s quirk ‘Beast’ allows him to turn into a hybrid man-beast. It also gives him physical strength, fine-tuned senses and durability.
Shishida was able to overwhelm Tsuyu’s team during their joint training match. He also played an essential role in the battle against Gigantomachia.
13 Fumikage Tokoyami
Quirk – Dark Shadow
Tokoyami’s mysterious quirk lets him control a shadowy figure called Dark Shadow. Dark Shadow is incredibly powerful and agile. It is also so strong that Tokoyami often loses his control over it.
Since interning with Hawks, Tokoyami has improved exponentially and has learned to use Dark Shadow to fly. He also saved Hawks during the Villa Raid in Chapter 271.
12 Eijiro Kirishima
Quirk – Hardening
Kirishima’s quirk hardens his skin to the point that not even bullets can pierce it. The effect slowly wears off as Kirishima takes damage but makes him stronger in the long run.
Kirishima grew the most during the Shie Hassaikai Arc– not just with his quirk but also mentally. During his fight against Rappa, he maintained his hardening through sheer willpower alone and even improved his hardening.
He took a step towards overcoming his hesitation when facing villains, which gave FatGum the chance to take down the villain.
11 Seiji Shishikura
Quirk – Meatball
Shiketsu High School is as prestigious in the West as U.A. is in the East. Shishikura is a second-year Shiketsu student Kaminari, Kirishima and Bakugo encountered during the Provisional Hero License Exam.
Shishikura’s quirk ‘Meatball’ allows him to manipulate his own flesh and even his opponents’ flesh.
During the provisional exam, he incapacitated several students, including Kirishima and Bakugo, by hitting them with projectiles of his flesh.
Shishikura outsmarted even Bakugo by sneaking a projectile behind him. He’s strongly driven by his values and wouldn’t have lost to the trio if it weren’t for Kaminari.
10 Nagamasa Mora
Quirk – Extend-o-Hair
Mora is one of the more subdued, polite second-year students of Shiketsu.
True to its name, Mora’s quirk ‘Extend-o-Hair’ lets him control the bushy hair that covers his entire body. His hair is very resilient, and he can use it to catch multiple enemies at a time.
Much like Class B’s Shiozaki, Mora’s quirk is versatile. During phase two, Mora also used his quirk to clear out rubble as part of the rescue test.
9 Yo Shindo
Quirk – Vibrate
Shindo was one of the unassuming Ketsubutsu students Class A met before the Provisional Hero License Exam. The third-year student later turned out to be two-faced and incredibly strong.
Shindo’s quirk, ‘Vibrate,’ lets him create massive tremors and earthquakes. He can vibrate anything he touches, but as a side effect feels the aftershocks in his body.
During the ‘crushing of U.A.’ during phase one of the exam, Shindo created a huge earthquake that shook up the entire battlefield and separated all the Class A students.
He was also the first to react to Gang Orca appearing during phase two of the test.
8 Juzo Honenuki
Quirk – Softening
Honenuki is also one of the students who got into U.A. through recommendations and is the strongest in Class B.
His quirk ‘Softening’ is straightforward but versatile– it lets him soften anything he touches and use it to trap opponents or enhance his mobility.
Honenuki has excellent strategic and tactical skills, highlighting during the joint training. His quirk also played an essential part in restraining Gigantomachia– a villain not even pro-heroes like Midnight and Mt. Lady could stop.
7 Nejire Hado
Quirk – Wave Motion
Hado, too together with Mirio and Amajiki, is one of the Big Three of U.A.– the strongest students of the school. Hado’s quirk ‘Wave Motion’ converts her life energy into blast waves that take the shape of spirals.
Although this reduces the speed and brunt force of the attack, Hado’s blast waves are strong nonetheless.
During her internship with Ryukyu, Hado’s attacks were strong enough to take down two giant villains even though they’d taken quirk-enhancing boosters.
6 Inasa Yoarashi
Quirk – Whirlwind
Yoarashi is yet another Shiketsu student– a first-year student who was surprisingly once one of the recommended students applying at U.A. Yoarashi even had the highest score in the Entrance Exam.
Yoarashi’s quirk ‘Whirlwind’ lets him control air and wind very precisely. He can create powerful gusts and whirlwinds and has fine control over his quirk.
Yoarashi took out nearly 120 students in a go during the first phase of the Provisional Hero License Exam. During phase two, he displayed meticulous control over his quirk by using different types of winds at once to move rubble and carry out the rescue missions. He later also went head to head with Gang Orca and Todoroki.
5 Shoto Todoroki
Quirk – Half-Cold Half-Hot
Even though Todoroki has only recently begun training to use his flames, he is still one of the powerhouses of Class A.
As the name implies, ‘Half-Cold Half-Hot’ lets Todoroki emit flames from the left side and ice and cold from the right side of his body.
Unlike his father, Todoroki can also avoid any bodily damage from using his quirk by alternating between the two elements or using them together.
Todoroki was able to wipe out an entire group of students from Seijin High School by himself during the Provisional Hero License Exam. He definitely has the potential to be one of the next Big Three.
4 Tamaki Amajiki
Quirk – Manifest
Although Amajiki can seem unmotivated and uninterested, he is still one of the current Big Three and is incredibly powerful. Amajiki’s quirk lets him manifest physical traits of the food he eats. He can also take on multiple traits from multiple foods at the same time.
Amajiki’s abilities grabbed the spotlight during the Shie Hassaikai Raid. Not only did he take the initiative to fight three of Chisaki’s henchmen, but he also single-handedly defeated them. He was very resourceful with his quirk and made good use of his opponents’ dynamics and weaknesses.
3 Katsuki Bakugo
Quirk – Explosion
Although Bakugo’s aggressiveness might not befit a hero, his abilities aren’t to be underestimated. Bakugo is one of Class A’s strongest students. His quirk ‘Explosion’ ignites the nitroglycerin sweat he produces to create large explosions from his palms.
Bakugo has continued to keep up with Midoriya throughout the series and has honed his quirk for more precise deadly attacks. His unquenchable thirst for victory is likely his biggest strength.
2 Togata Mirio
Quirk – Permeation
Mirio is one of the Big Three students of U.A. Mirio’s quirk ‘Permeation’ allows him to pass through any matter by turning himself intangible.
Although his quirk on its own wasn’t very powerful, had many technical difficulties and was incredibly dangerous, Mirio overcame all these hurdles through hard work and mastered his quirk.
He even impressed Nighteye, who considered him the best replacement for All Might as the Number One Hero. Mirio also would’ve defeated Chisaki during the Shie Hassaikai Raid if he hadn’t lost his quirk.
1 Izuku Midoriya
Quirk – One For All
Izuku Midoriya is the strongest student and one of the strongest heroes in My Hero Academia. He’s the current holder of the stockpiling power quirk – One For All and also possesses six other quirks. Besides his overwhelming strength, Izuku is faster than Gran Torino himself due to his Full Cowl: Shoot style.
He is the only one capable of defeating All For One, making him the strongest student in the series.
Midoriya is also the only person except All For One capable of using multiple quirks simultaneously with no restrictions.
