Kekkai Genkai in the Narutoverse are shinobi techniques that are limited by blood. These jutsu are unique to specific clans and are passed down generations and bloodlines (most of the time). For this reason, they cannot be copied or learned.
Kekkai Genkai are either body based (example: Sharingan dojutsu) or chakra based (example: Magnet Release nature transformation).
The power implemented by each Kekkai Genkai is only as strong as its user. But in this article, I will rank the Kekkai Genkai based on the average user and also the feats and extent to which we’ve witnessed their power.
[Note that this list will only include Kekkai Genkai – the combination of two chakra natures, and not Kekkai Tota, which combines three elements. Dust/Particle Release is Kekkai Tota.]
15Ice Release – Yuki Clan
Ice Release is a nature transformation Kekkei Genkai, a combination of water and wind techniques. Haku used it to create ice mirrors that could imprison targets between them. He could also use them to travel instantaneously through them.
We’ve only ever canonically seen Ice Release used by Haku and his mom, but in general, I think ice manipulation could be a reliable technique when it comes to speed, teleportation, impact, and trapping victims.
14Storm Release
Storm or Gale Release is a combination of Water Release and Lightning Release. Its most notable user is Darui, whose flowing laser beams are among the most memorable techniques seen yet.
Madara uses Sage Art: Storm Release Light Fang which shoots through one of Naruto’s Truth-Seeking Orbs.
13Lava Release
Lave Release is a nature transformation Kekkei Genkai that combines fire and earth jutsu. It has been wielded by a number of ninjas including Boro, Kurotsuchi, Mei, and Naruto.
Naruto used it in the form of Sage Art: Lava Release Rasenshuriken which was powerful enough to split the tree form of Ten Tails.
12Magnet Release – Kazekage Clan
Magnet Release combines the nature transformation releases of wind and earth techniques. Used by the Third and Fourth Kazekage and later by Gaara, Magnet Release is a powerful sealing technique using the physical attribute of magnetism.
Naruto used Shukaku’s Magnet Release and Cursed Seal with his Rasengan to create Sage Art: Magnet Release Rasengan to trap Madara.
Toroi also used this Kekkai Genkai with his shuriken to magnetize other objects and manipulate them.
11Scorch Release
Scorch Release combines Fire and Wind Release to create a scorching withdrawal of any moisture from a target.
Scorch Release has only been seen twice – once by Pakura, and once by Sasuke and Naruto, who combine their fire and wind-style techniques.
Pakura’s flaming orbs in the anime sucked her opponents’ bodies dry, leaving them withered and quite dead.
10Ketsuryugan (Blood Dragon Eye) – Chinoike Clan
This dojutsu is technically as strong as the Sharingan, but since we’ve only really seen Chino use it, we can’t gauge its actual power.
It allows the user to manipulate blood by controlling the iron in a person. Upon contact, Chino used the Blood Transformation technique to change the appearance of her targets and Exploding Human Technique to make them pop like a balloon.
Chino could also hypnotize targets merely by looking into their eyes.
9Boil Release
Boil Release combines Fire Release and Water Release. This corrosive technique was famously used by the Fifth Mizukage, Mei Terumi, to melt a part of Madara’s Susanoo.
Her acidic steam can spread swiftly in any area, dissolving brutally anything that comes in contact with it.
It was also used by Han, the Jinchuriki of Five Tails, to melt his surroundings.
8Senrigan – Otsutsuki Clan
Senrigan is known to be the ability of Shibai Otsutsuki, the most powerful Otsutsuki. It was transplanted by Amado into Ada/Eida.
It is so low on the list since not much is known about this technique, but it is theoretically one of the most powerful techniques in the Narutoverse.
It gives the user the ability to see and hear any event in the present or the past, no matter the dimension. Senrigan literally means clairvoyance.
7Isshiki’s Dojutsu – Otsutsuki Clan
This unnamed dojutsu was first manifested by Isshiki, one of the most powerful members of the Otsutsuki clan, and then in Kawaki, through Kama/Karma.
It allows the user to shrink themselves and other objects in their line of vision. With space-time ninjutsu, the user can also store shrunken objects in a dimension without time.
Another technique lets the user summon four giant black cubes from a pocket dimension which renders sensory-type shinobi useless.
6Shikotsumyaku (Dead Bone Pulse) – Kaguya Clan
Often touted the most badass Kekkai Genkai in Naruto, this bone manipulating ninjutsu literally gives the wielder the ability to grow another spine.
Kaguya Otsutsuki was the first to display this technique (classified as Kekkei Mora) where she could control her own skeleton.
Kimimaro, the last remaining member of the Kaguya clan, weaponized his bones by growing, sharpening, and hardening them. He could use them for close- and long-range moves and also for defense, keeping even the strongest attacks at bay.
5Jougan – Otsutsuki Clan
The Jougan/Jogan is a dojutsu currently unique to Boruto. The Otsutsuki clan think this Kekkai Gengai is troublesome because of its power.
Again, its lower place on the list is solely because we have yet to see this technique in conscious action – although manga readers won’t have to wait too long until the time-skip.
It seems to have most of the abilities of the Byakugan and let the user see the chakra pathway system, Tenketsu, and the invisible barriers between dimensions. With Momoshiki’s Karma, Boruto’s use of Jougan will be unparalleled.
4Wood Release – Senju Clan, Otsutsuki Clan
Wood Release is a nature transformation Kekkei Genkai that combines Earth and Water Release.
Hashirama Senju, the First Hokage, was the first and only natural wielder of Wood Release. He used it to build Konoha itself. He also used it to triumph against Madara’s Mangekyou Sharingan and Nine Tails together.
Some people believe that Wood Release is only this powerful because of Hashirama, and while this might be true to an extent, it is Wood Release that makes Hashirama so powerful. It gave him the purest Sage Mode with zero cooldown time.
It is powerful enough to restrain multiple Tailed Beasts and versatile enough to create a clone army, and manipulate, absorb, and convert chakra into life force.
3Byakugyan/Tenseigan – Hyuga Clan, Otsutsuki Clan
Byakugan is regarded as one of the 3 Great Dojutsu and is one of the most powerful Kekkai Genkai witnessed in the series. While it originated in the Otsutsuki clan, the Byakugan became more apparent in the descendants of the Otsutsuki – the Hyuga.
The Byakugan is also known as the All-Seeing Eye and literally gives the user a 360-degree field of vision, save for a miniscule blind spot. It can view the entirety of the chakra pathway system. The Hyuga clan’s Gentle Fist technique can be used in conjunction to hit critical points and immobolize victims.
The Tenseigan was introduced in The Last: Naruto the Movie but doesn’t show the full potential of this jutsu. It is acquired when an Otsutsuki is implanted with the Byakugan of a Hyuga and supposedly grants power over the moon.
If Tenseigan is explored further, I expect it could possibly manipulate gravity. But I doubt this will happen since the next dojutsu that the Narutoverse will explore is Jougan.
The Tenseigan can lose its power and revert back to Byakugan.
2Sharingan/(Eternal) Mangekyo Sharingan – Uchiha Clan, Otsutsuki Clan
Sharingan is also regarded as one of the 3 Great Dojutsu and one of the most powerful techniques of Naruto.
It is awakened when an Uchiha clan member experiences a powerful emotion. It gives insight and clarity into chakra and perception.
It can influence a target’s thoughts and actions and let the user enter the subconscious of others, including that of Tailed Beasts. It also lets the user accurately reproduce any movement they see.
The Sharingan can be evolved into the Mangekyo Sharingan by experiencing the trauma of loss. Sasuke gains this after his brother Itachi’s death.
Transplanting Itachi’s eyes after his eyesight begins to deteriorate, Sasuke gains the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan, which lets him use the power of Mangekyo without exhausting him.
Mangekyo Sharingan allows Sasuke to use Amaterasu, the black flames, which can burn fire itself. It also gives him the ability to use Susanoo. Ultimately, he can produce a Complete Body Susanoo, comparable in size and power to Tailed Beast Mode.
Obito and Kakashi were able to use Kamui with Mangekyo to teleport opponents while Madara was able to evolve his Mangekyo into Rinnegan.
1Rinnegan – Otsutsuki Clan
Rinnegan is the strongest Kekkai Genkai in the Narutoverse since it makes the user a “God of Creation” or “God of Destruction.” It lets the wielder use the Six Paths Technique, revive the dead, travel in spacetime, seal Ten Tails, awaken Rinne Sharingan, and cast Infinite Tsukuyomi.
There might be other powerful Kekkai Genkai like Jougan that overtake it in the future, but currently, Rinnegan is the one we have seen in action the most.
Be it the awesome show of pure power displayed by Hagoromo, Madara, Nagato, Sasuke, and Naruto with Six Paths and Six Paths of Pain, or the absorption of chakra by Momoshiki, Rinnegan never fails to impress.
Rinnegan has different manifestations and appearances in users and has more techniques than can be listed.
Along with Sharingan and Byakugan, it is amongst the 3 Great Dojutsu ever witnessed.
