The film centres around Katie and Kristi, two sisters who befriend an invisible entity named Toby which leads to strange things that keep happening around them.

With her faced wrapped in bandages, the twins are determined to find out the real identity of the woman living in their house. Another shivering tale which combines psychology and horror.

6. Crawl (2019)

A father (Barry Pepper) and daughter (Kaya Scodelario) along with their pet dog gets trapped in their home during a hurricane in Florida. They must save themselves from the flood water, but unfortunately that’s not the only problem out there.

If  you’re looking for films with natural horror tropes, this is the right pick. It follows the path of Jaws or Moby Dick, where humans are forced to fight natural forces beyond their control. It’s definitely no less horrifying than a film with ghosts and monsters.

5. The Devil’s Doorway (2018)

The Devil’s Doorway tells the story of Father Thomas Riley and Father John Thornton who are sent to Vatican to look into a mysterious and miraculous event in an Irish home.

4. Ghost Stories (2018)

This one is like an anthology of films.

Directed by Jeremy Dyson and Andy Nyman, the film talks about Professor Phillip Goodman (played by Andy Nyman himself) who is determined to solve the mystery behind three unexplainable events.

He embarks on a journey to solve these three events, all actually connected to his own life. Even if you’re too familiar with the tropes in this one, you can enjoy a quite cozy English feel as you watch it.

3. 28 Days Later (2002)

This one definitely needed a mention considering the pandemic driven times we are living in.

Directed by Danny Boyle, the film tells the story of four survivors led by Jim (Cillian Murphy) who struggle to cope with life after a deadly virus changes life and world around them.

Yes, we are most likely living this horror film at the moment. Jokes apart, unless you don’t like major deja-vus, this critically acclaimed film is surely worth your time.

2. Lights Out (2016)

This supernatural horror film is based on David F Sandberg’s 2013 short film of the same name.

It centres around a young woman named Rebecca (Teresa Palmer) who must face her fears from childhood in order to save her brother from an unknown supernatural entity which seems to be attached to their mother.

A sequel is said to be in development too.

1. Pet Sematary (2019)

Are you afraid of cats? Then think before you go for this one. Are you a cat lover? Then too think before you go for this one.

Wait, doesn’t that mean everyone, because you’re either a cat lover or a hater right?

Jokes apart, another Stephen King adaptation, Pet Semetary is quite a dark film that tells the story of a Dr Louis Creed and his family, who lose their pet cat in an accident and bury it in a cemetery.

However, that is not the end and unknown secrets haunt the family unexpected ways. Highly recommended.
