As the release of Godzilla vs. Kong, the fourth movie in the Godzilla MonsterVerse, inches closer, we decided it’s time to revisit the mighty Titans who’ve appeared in the kaiju series so far—and who’s the strongest of them all.
Godzilla is the longest-running film franchise in the world. It was created by the Japanese studio Toho in 1954. Since then, there have been over 32 films produced by them, and four produced by American studios Legendary Pictures and TriStar Pictures.
The Legendary Pictures offshoot of the series, a crossover between Godzilla and another popular character Kong, is popularly known as the MonsterVerse.
Read on to find out the 15 mightiest—and weakest—Titans in the MonsterVerse.
15 Spore Mantis
Spore Mantises are giant insects that have wooden, tree-like bodies that bestow them with great camouflage abilities in their forest habitat.
They are strong and have high durability due to their sturdy structure. They have jaws that are strong enough to crush bones, and they can hunt prey smaller or equal in size to them.
However, they back away in the presence of Skullcrawlers, so they are not ultimately that strong.
This might just mean that Spore Mantises are the weakest Titan in the MonsterVerse.
The next installment in the MonsterVerse, Godzilla vs. Kong, is due to hit screens on March 31.
14 Sker Buffaloes
Sker Buffaloes are essentially oversized water buffaloes, with a few additional features.
The amphibious bovines’ bulky bodies are covered in algae due to the time they spend underwater.
It is speculated that they can run fast when provoked and have massive horns, which they are said to be able to use to attack their enemies. However, we never actually see them do this—they are usually seen as large, lumbering, slow-moving creatures who can easily fall prey to Skullcrawlers.
13 Mire Squid
Mire Squids are shown in Kong: Skull Island. Their biology resembles that of squids.
They are predators who lurk in the waters of Skull Island and have extremely flexible arms that they use to constrict prey that’s even as big as Kong. Although they are aquatic, they are able to put up a fight even when dragged out of water.
They are able to expel thick clouds of heated ink and create powerful whirlpools in water.
However, they are easily killed by Kong when he stomps on them.
12 Mother Longlegs
Mother Longlegs are giant arachnids that are 5 to 7 meters tall and are named so due to their incredibly long legs which are filled with poison that can be used to incapacitate victims.
They are equipped with pincer-like claws that allow them to easily grab their prey, are very speedy and agile, and possess considerable strength.
They are also able to fire webbing at their opponents to slow them down.
However, they are ultimately no match for Kong, who is able to crush them to death.
11 Psychovultures
These avian reptiles first appear in Kong: Skull Island, and bizarrely enough, are shown to voluntarily ingest toxic pufferfish, which induces psychoactive effects and causes them to go on a hunting rampage, destroying everything they encounter.
Psychovultures can camouflage themselves to hide from predators and prey by perching as a flock on leafless trees. They can emit bolts of electricity from their mouths, fly at great speeds, are strong enough to rip a human’s limbs off with their snouts, and have thermal vision.
However, they are easily killed by gunshots or if bisected with sharp objects.
10 Skullcrawlers
These giant, reptilian monsters make their first appearance in Kong: Skull Island as the primary antagonists.
They are extremely aggressive pack hunters who are shown to have attacked and killed Kong’s parents when he was a child, which would have been a remarkable feat considering their size.
They are intelligent, agile beings with an extremely strong sense of smell, a powerful tongue that can speedily grab prey, and a muscular tail that can be used to attack opponents.
However, they are ultimately no match for Kong, who is able to eviscerate them by ripping out their tongues, which are connected to their internal organs.
9 Scylla
Scylla is another squid-like Titan, who is amphibious in nature.
She is covered in spiky armor that allows her to topple buildings and to easily withstand bullets and missiles.
Scylla also has spiky-tipped legs that are hard enough to tear through solid rock and tendrils that allow her to grasp smaller enemies and destroy buildings.
She can emit large amounts of liquid nitrogen from her body, which helps slow down the rise in sea levels caused by global warming.
8 Methuselah
Methuselah is a Biblical Titan.
Although he moves slowly and clumsily due to the extreme weight of his back, which is made up of rock and vegetation, Methuselah can still cause a significant amount of damage with his powerful jaws and massive horns.
He is extremely durable due to the nature of his back, and can easily camouflage himself as a mountain.
7 Behemoth
This sloth-like monster with the massive tusks of a woolly mammoth is a prehistoric creature we first saw in King of Monsters. He is also a Biblical Titan, like Methuselah.
Although not very well equipped for combat, Behemoth is exceptionally durable. His fur is fireproof, and he can also attack with his claws when standing on his hind legs if needed.
6 M.U.T.O.s
We have seen three unnamed M.U.T.O.s (Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms)—two in the first Godzilla as the primary antagonists, and a third in King of Monsters as a minor Titan who responds to the call of King Ghidorah.
These prehistoric parasites trample anything in their path, determined to get their fill of radiation, which is what nourishes them.
M.U.T.O.s have dangerous hook-like claws that enable them to hack and stab at opponent Titans—strong enough to draw blood from Godzilla when they battle him. They are also strong enough to not sustain any damage despite military fire raining down upon them.
They are intelligent, agile, and immensely physically strong. Although they are not as massive as Godzilla, they use their size to their advantage by outmaneuvering him.
Though they were able to wreak significant havoc and dodge Godzilla, they ultimately could not defeat his extreme strength and nuclear beam.
5 Mothra
Another mighty Titan, Mothra, may be considered docile and benevolent compared to her Titan counterparts, but that doesn’t mean she’s not tough.
Mothra is considered the “giver of life”, and has various powerful abilities. This includes a stinger that’s powerful enough to pierce Rodan’s geothermal armor and her ability to continue fighting despite sustaining severe burns due to proximity to Rodan. She can also fly at incredible speeds and can fire blasts of spider-like silk that can immobilize and trap other titans.
She can also reincarnate by laying an egg in her imago state (the final stage during metamorphosis), from which she will be reborn with her memories intact after her previous body dies.
Mothra is extremely intelligent too, showing loyalty towards Godzilla even when Ghidorah usurps his position as alpha.
4 Rodan
Rodan is a giant, flying pterosaur. He is formidable in combat, as seen in Godzilla: King of Monsters.
He radiates heat measuring over 2000°F, which makes him able to burn opponents upon close contact with his body. He uses this power to nearly burn Mothra to death in King of Monsters.
Rodan also possesses the ability to create a sonic thunderclap beneath him when he flies, due to his massive wingspan. This can easily decimate buildings with the tornado-like force generated.
He is entirely bulletproof because of his natural armor and is extremely fast and robust.
3 Kong
We first encountered Kong in Kong: Skull Island, and have since seen much of his impressive abilities in the second and third MonsterVerse movies.
Kong is an impressive climber who can quickly scale sheer cliffs and mountains and is durable enough to withstand bullets from military helicopters and Skullcrawlers and still defend himself. He has powerful hearing, speed, strength, and agility.
He is also intelligent enough to differentiate between his enemies and allies, as we see when he kills Skullcrawlers and a group of Mother Longlegs but spares the life of a human.
All of this is despite him not being fully grown yet! Over 30 years have shown to have passed since Kong: Skull Island, so Kong has gotten bigger and presumably more powerful.
This merits Kong third place at the very least—we may see him climb up the list based on what takes place in Godzilla vs. Kong.
2 King Ghidorah
We got to see the might of this Titan in full glory in Godzilla: King of Monsters, and it is evident that this former King of Monsters (before being dethroned by Godzilla) is not to be trifled with.
He has the power to generate hurricane-force winds with his ability to fly at subsonic speeds, can create lightning storms where he goes and can drain energy from sources around him—including Godzilla’s signature nuclear energy.
All of this certainly makes the three-headed serpent formidable enough to be called Godzilla’s main nemesis.
1 Godzilla
Godzilla – The King of Monsters is the strongest titan (kaiju) in the MonsterVerse. He managed to plug a hole in the Earth down to the middle with his atomic breath and also possesses the ability to heal via radiation absorption. Godzilla’s truly a god even among titans.
The OG Titan is rarely, if ever, seen defeated, even when he goes up against Titans who can fight against him well.
One can definitely count him as the strongest Titan!
