The Christmas special episode of Dynasty saw an intriguing turn of events for numerous characters.
Blake backed out of his election campaign, Fallon and Liam were still working through their challenges, and Jeff finally proved his suspicions to his mother, among other things.
The show is currently on a hiatus and will return only on March 11, which is more than a month away. Now, I know you desperately want to see how the show unfolds, but you’ll just have to wait to find out.
But, while you’re waiting, I’ve got just what you need – A break from Dynasty and a binge plan for shows that are similar to it. If you’ve enjoyed this show, you’ll love the others on this binge list. While all these shows aren’t exactly the same as Dynasty, they share common premises, plot narratives, and tropes.
Let’s dive right in.
If you’ve just watched Dynasty, you can check out binge-worthy shows like Succession, Billions, Empire, and more. The plot revolves around rich people, their elite problems, money, greed, and power.
10 Grand Hotel
Let’s kick the list off with this heavily underrated show. The show doesn’t have great content, but people underestimate its entertainment value. It’s about a borderline dysfunctional family that owns a grand hotel in Miami.
The show gives you proper soap opera feels, with its over-the-top drama, predictable yet much-awaited plot twists, and more.
9 Bloodline
Bloodline is a much darker and more grounded version of Dynasty. This series is far from campy. If you’re someone who wants to watch a show around family dynamics and drama with a different tonality, add this one to your list.
The acting performances are impeccable, and the narrative keeps you hooked throughout. There’s just one catch to this. You’ll need to be a little patient in the first couple of episodes. It starts slow but picks up the pace, and you wouldn’t want to leave the show midway.
8 Revenge
The show is as subtle as its title. Spoiler alert: The premise of the series is essentially a tale of, you guessed it right, revenge.
A young daughter is separated from her father, who is framed for a crime he didn’t commit. The woman he loved betrayed him, and now the daughter is out to get everyone behind this conspiracy. This is the premise of the show.
She does so by trying to get into the elite circles of the society since the true perpetrators exist in those circles. It is cheesy, cliche, melodramatic, and you will love every bit of it.
7 The Royals
Presenting exhibit B of a well-thought-out title. The show is about a fictional royal family whose heir passes away, and the entire family has to safeguard their position on the throne.
The show is essentially Dynasty packaged as a political drama set within the British monarchy.
Most tropes and narratives on a broader level are similar to Dynasty and evoke the same kind of emotions as Dynasty. The show is a less profound and more superficial version of Crown. So, it makes up for an entertaining watch.
6 Dallas
Dallas is Dynasty with a Southern accent. The premise follows the life of two aristocratic families that are sworn enemies.
The show initially feels a little like Romeo and Juliet blended with a good mix of drama between these families but later turns into a proper soap opera.
Every episode seems to have the same three-act structure, and you can always see the flip/twist coming.
Despite its lack of novelty, you’d devour these episodes like someone hungry for any kind of content. It’s a perfect series to distract you from waiting for Dynasty.
5 Downton Abbey
Downton Abbey is a period drama that is popular for its witty writing and authentic portrayal of English culture between 1912 and 1926.
This show goes beyond being a soap opera by creating some of the most English characters, and I mean that in a good sense.
We get insights into the mindsets of such elite families who lived back then and also understand various political and societal issues.
4 Filthy Rich
It doesn’t get better than this when it comes to melodrama, cringe-worthy character arcs, and the sheer disregard for reality.
What makes this show even more fun is how the actors portray their characters with such conviction that you want to believe everything they say and do, no matter how hysterical it gets.
3 Empire
At this point, I am out of one-liners to describe how the writers seem to lack the concept of surprise and give everything away in the title. Yes, this show is just like Dynasty, and yes, you will love it.
However, one exciting thing about the show is Terence Howard. You might have seen him as Colonel Rhodes in Iron Man before Don Cheadle replaced him.
Terence Howard is pretty interesting as an actor, and we get a glimpse of what he could do with a gritty role. So watch out for his performance.
2 Billions
Billions is a series about money, power, greed, mind games, etc., but it isn’t exactly like Dynasty. The show is set in the world of stock markets, securities, law, etc.
While some call it an evolved version of Suits, I think one can count this show as what Dynasty could’ve been if the writers had decided not to go with the soap opera format.
If you enjoy a good plot with incredible performances, then check this one out. I bet you won’t stop until you’ve watched all seasons because it is that addictive.
1 Succession
Succession in every sense is the better version of Dynasty. If Dynasty were smarter and grittier, you’d get yourself a Succession. The show has three seasons and is a must-watch for everyone.
When you look at numerous new age shows, every subsequent season becomes a templated version of the show’s first season. However, Succession hasn’t fallen into that trap yet.
These are the top 10 shows like Dynasty, and you can watch all these before March 11, 2022. But before you get started, here are a few honorary mentions – Gossip Girl, Desperate Housewives, and Devious Maids.
