Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is filled with quests and missions of bravery, companionship, and betrayal, each better than the rest. Let’s find out which sequence ranks on the top in AC: Valhalla.
The latest release from Ubisoft Assassin’s Creed Valhalla has finally perfected the RPG formulae after getting free from the stealth-based shackles.
Even though I like the original AC titles as they were true to their namesake and explored the Creed rather than open RPG elements, I thoroughly enjoyed Valhalla. Much to my surprise, the writing felt really solid and made me forget about the Brotherhood and Templars.
The main story arc just kept on giving, and one treachery after the other, I decided to rank the top mission sequences of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. Beware, this post will contain major spoilers, so consider yourself warned!
10 The Hidden Blade
In terms of gameplay, this sequence is not of much importance, but I like this part of the story for what it stands for. Even though a bit sublime, it ties Eivor to the Creed. Now many of you would disagree, and yes, the Brotherhood’s role is not a major one, but it is nonetheless there.
Basim and Sigurd present the Hidden Blade to Eivor, but Hytham is not totally overboard with it. Obviously, I somewhat agree with him that the hidden blade is almost a tradition of the Creed to be just given away! But then again, Sigurd comes in with his calm logic, and anyway, who are we to make a fetish out of a metal piece?
9 Layla Meets The Reader
“Who would want to end their life in here?” that makes the two of us Layla. In the modern world, after we have just lived through Eivor fighting off Basim, we still have that one tiny little problem about all of humanity vanishing.
Nothing major, but we still have to take care of it. Shaun brilliantly deduces that the earth’s current crisis originates from the hidden temple where Desmond saved the world a few titles back. Talk about connecting the dots!
So we take the old staff of Hermes and pop into a radiation filled underground labyrinth like it’s an everyday task. It’s something else parkouring through old human technology that makes you just awe at Isu architecture.
After getting connected to the mainframe, we meet a mysterious human torch called The Reader. Lo and behold, it is none other than the beloved Desmond Miles! The original nostalgia from the series could not have been higher in this mission sequence.
8 East Anglia Arc: Rued Boss Fight
For me, the entire East Anglia arc in itself was really enjoyable; Oswald is just one of those likable characters that you can not help but connect with. The whole arc takes us through a lot. We start by training holmgang, and then Oswald takes matters into his own hands. Through a cinematic raid, a boss fight, a wedding, and another battle, the arc had it all!
The castle battle with Rued, in particular, got me pumped a lot. There have been several sieges in the assassin’s creed series, but the attack on Rued’s fortifications with that hyped up music in the background would really make you feel like a Viking raider.
7 Sending Off Soma
As Eivor puts it, victory comes at a great cost; sometimes, the price is so high that it makes you wonder if it was even worth it. Soma was one such fallen hero whose send-off was one of the most emotional ones in the storyline.
I really felt connected during Eivor’s speech at Soma’s funeral, and it was one of the most well-written sequences of the game. Soma was by our side as she pledged allegiances to our cause, and even during her last battle, she was faithful to the cause. Literally, her last words could not have been better chosen than the war cry to hail Valhalla.
6 Taming The Great Fenrir
Are you even a warrior if you can’t take down a wolf single-handedly, and did I mention that the wolf is dragon-sized? Fenrir is not your usual beast, but he is the wolf son of Loki himself. Prophesied to take down Odin, the wolf must be tamed before it is too late.
Fenrir is a significant part of the lore and also the namesake of our character in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. So, obviously, battling him in person made it more legendary. Although, I still feel that the treatment of Fenrir could have been much better.
Ultimately a lot of trouble could have been avoided (hinting towards Loki in the endgame) only if prophecies could have been taken lightly. The boss fight takes place in the mission titled ‘Binding Fate,’ and we are taken to Asgard once again.
Now to take on Fenrir is no easy task, so be sure to parry the attacks as even a scratch from the wolf can be deadly.
5 Ragnarok: Loki Defying Odin
This sequence is not accessible if you do not complete some specific pre-requirements, but I really liked this hidden addition in AC: Valhalla. It feels like the final puzzle piece, which ties in the whole Asgard arc.
We already know that Odin (whom we live through Eivor) is trying to escape his fate during Ragnarok. In the light of ultimate death, Odin and seven other Norse gods drink a special mead that would allow them to survive Ragnarok, but we are left on a cliffhanger to what happens next, not cool!
To get the story ahead, we need to collect all Animus anomalies, and only then we face the end of Ragnarok. The special drink allows the Norse gods to be reincarnated later in history. Loki ambushes the meeting and takes the place of the eighth Isu, and is reincarnated later in the timeline of AC: Valhalla!
4 The Poor Fellow Soldier Reveal
One thing that I did not like about Assassin’s Creed Valhalla was even though it was an AC title; the Creed felt like it was added as an afterthought. Nevertheless, it was not entirely forgotten as we hunted the Templars’ beta versions known as the ‘Ancient Order.’ It was not that Eivor woke up one fine day on a mission to seek out these foes of the order.
We were indeed fed information from the ‘Poor Fellow Soldier of the Christ,’ and towards the end of all elements of the Order, we finally get to this fellow. Boy, was I surprised at the big reveal! It turns out that the poor fellow soldier is none other than King Alfred, and that’s not all; the Grand Maester that we have been searching for all along is Alfred himself! He has been working from inside to destroy the ancient order. Talk about the big brain plans.
3 Taking On Basim, a.k.a Loki
The storyline is filled with betrayal, but this one I was not expecting. Basim seemed like an upstanding chap from the start when he returns with Sigurd. You would never expect the only link to the Creed in the whole storyline to turn against you in the end! Basim is the one that illuminates us about the Hidden Ones, and he is the one who gifts us the Hidden Blade (which Eivor puts on the wrong way, but whatever).
It turns out Basim is actually the reincarnation of Loki, and we are Isu Odin. If you guys remember your Norse history or just the game’s storyline, Odin actually imprisoned Loki’s wolf son to further his own lifespan. Now Loki is out to get us to get revenge for his own family, and Basim was just one of the covers to get to us.
2 Eivor defying Odin
Towards the end of the main storyline, Sigurd and Eivor return to Norway to uncover the hidden Norse temple. Here they are transported to Valhalla through the advanced computer system. The whole game should have ended here, right? They got to Valhalla, and it is the name of the title, so this should be the end. Wrong! And that is exactly why I like this mission sequence.
This Valhalla is almost like a paradise, but as soon as Eivor sees his father among the warriors, he realizes it just a dream world and not what they expected. Time to get out but there is only one problem, the vision of Odin that has been helping us all along won’t let us leave. Time to fight one of the greatest Norse Gods!
1 Battle For The Northern Way
The best mission sequence in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is the ‘Battle for the Northern Way’. The quest foreshadows the game’s entire plot and sets the overall theme about starting over from scratch in a foreign land.
The first quest of the game is arguably the best and is one of my favorites. The feeling of starting over just after being raided as we work through the snow to look for food and our warrior comrades really resonates with the Viking clan’s overall theme of restarting in England.
Just like the rest of the quests, this felt really well written and connected with the storyline, and only a few games come close to this in terms of overall story arcs.
