By now, we’ve all watched most of the all-time classic Christmas movies such as A Charlie Brown Christmas, Home Alone, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Since Christmas is around the corner, I looked up some newer Christmas movies.
New Christmas-themed movies are released almost every year, and many go unnoticed because we are all busy watching the comfort classics. But for those of you who want to watch something new or just give a different Christmas movie a try, I have a whole list of films that are worth your time.
An advanced Merry Christmas to you and happy binging!
1 Love Hard (2021)
Love Hard is Netflix’s latest Christmas-themed release starring Nina Dobrev from The Vampire Diaries. I am being honest with you. The movie is predictable, and the story is not one you’ve not heard before.
But this is the season for comfort and smiles, and Love Hard will give you just that. It is a classic, cute rom-com with a feel-good ending and a family feel. If you’re looking for a fresh rom-com to watch, I would recommend this one.
2 Night Before Christmas (2019)
This is another rom-com on the list, but with an exotic punch of time travel and history. The plot follows a medieval knight who has traveled through time to reach the present. He falls in love with a cynical science teacher who no longer believes in love.
The film is a light-hearted attempt to make you smile. It is the perfect choice if you’re planning to crawl into a blanket with a cup of hot chocolate and want an old-school romance to give you company.
3 Klaus (2019)
If there’s just one film you want to pick from this list, I would suggest Klaus. The animated film landed an Oscar nomination and also won the British Academy Award for Best Animated Film. Klaus is one of the best animated Christmas movies of recent times.
If you love animation, this is a must-watch. The film takes up an alternative origin story of Santa Claus and is mainly aimed at kids. But no matter what your age is, you will enjoy this one.
The film has stellar vocal performances with some brilliant animation work as well. It will make your Christmas special, I promise!
4 The Grinch (2018)
Before you get confused, there are three adaptations of Dr. Seuss’ original story about The Grinch. The latest one is an animated version released in 2018 where Benedict Cumberbatch lends his voice to the infamous green magical creature.
The story is the same as the usual story of The Grinch and how he detests Christmas. But even if you already know the story and have watched the 2000 live-action version of The Grinch, you could still give this one a try because of the beautiful animation and terrific vocal performances.
It is nothing you don’t know, but it will definitely make you smile. Isn’t that all we want for Christmas?
5 A California Christmas (2020)
Another typical Christmas rom-com, A California Christmas, revolves around a couple in love until one has to move to another city for various reasons. It is a laidback, carefree romance.
If you want a light watch and don’t mind watching a predictable story that can even be boring at times, you can give it a go.
6 The Christmas Chronicles (2018)
The Christmas Chronicles is a children’s fantasy movie featuring Santa Claus and the unexpected things that happen when two kids jump into his sleigh on Christmas Eve. It is a decent attempt to bring back the old-school Christmas movie vibe.
Though not exceptional, I would still consider this better than many other live-action childrens’ films made today. It is perfect if you want to watch it with kids in your family or maybe just want to feel like a child again.
7 Princess Switch 3 (2021)
Princess Switch 3 is the sequel to Princess Switch 1 and 2, featuring the same look-alikes from the previous films.
It is a good one-time watch, especially if you want a nice, sweet movie to watch with your friends on a holiday night. It is funny, charming, and has some aesthetically pleasing locations. What more can we ask for?
8 A Castle for Christmas (2021)
A Castle for Christmas is the story of an unusual romance between a best-selling author and a grumpy duke of a castle in Scotland. There is the whole opposites attract vibe, some funny moments, and unexpected chemistry between the leads.
It is nothing unpredictable but a guilty pleasure if you want some classic romance with a holiday vibe. There’s also a sort of royal vibe if you like that stuff.
9 Holidate (2020)
Holidate is another one for cliché rom-com lovers like me. It is youthful with some sweet moments and a feel-good charm. The plot revolves around two strangers who are tired of being single in the holiday season. So, they decide to pretend to be each other’s partners until real feelings rush in.
The most common plot in the world but still never fails to win hearts. It is a classic Christmas romance.
10 The Man Who Invented Christmas (2017)
I am ending the list with another must-watch Christmas movie but with a difference. This one is not like other usual Christmas movies. The plot revolves around famous real-life British novelist Charles Dickens and how he wrote A Christmas Carol, one of the greatest Christmas novels of all time.
You will love this one if you have read A Christmas Carol or watched the 2009 Disney animated adaptation. The film talks about the history of one of the best novels of all time and gives us a funny, witty depiction of Dickens’ life.
Watch it this Christmas; you won’t regret it.
