So, if you’re ready to dive headfirst into a world of adventure, action, and pure entertainment, join me as I count down the top 10 isekai anime that are worth your time.
From transported high schoolers to reincarnated knights, the world of Isekai is filled with all sorts of fascinating characters and storylines.
10 The Rising of the Shield Hero
This show doesn’t create a perfect fantasy world for otakus to drool over. Instead, it shows us a world that’s eerily similar to our own. Unfairness and corruption exist, and it’s not all sunshine and rainbows.
The Rising of the Shield Hero follows Naofumi Iwatani, an otaku who becomes the “Shield Hero” and is ridiculed for his weak abilities. Betrayed and falsely accused, Naofumi sets out to strengthen himself and his reputation.
Who doesn’t love an underdog story? Naofumi keeps getting knocked down, but he always gets back up. He may have a tough exterior, but he’s got a heart of gold. He’s always looking out for his party, even if they don’t appreciate him.
9 InuYasha
Inuyasha might be an oldie, but it’s still a goodie. If you’re down for a long series and love some action, supernatural vibes, romance, and history, this one’s for you.
InuYasha follows Kagome, a 15-year-old girl who gets transported to feudal Japan. With the help of Inuyasha, a half-demon boy, they embark on a quest to retrieve the scattered pieces of the Shikon Jewel.
The characters in Inuyasha are all unique and have their quirks. The plot itself is pretty cool, but it can get a little repetitive at times with all the pointless fights, failed attempts, and the slow pace of getting clues.
The romance is the real star of the show. It’s not overly romantic, but it’s sweet and heartwarming. Although, it’s kind of a bummer that the romance barely progresses.
8 Log Horizon
It might start off slow, but don’t let that fool you. The main character is a master strategist who approaches each situation with cunning and smarts, making the show really exciting to watch.
Log Horizon is about a group of gamers who are trapped in the virtual world of Elder Tale after a game update. Shiroe, a seasoned player, takes on the challenge of leading and negotiating with NPCs to bring stability to the virtual city of Akihabara.
It blends realism with fantasy, creating a world that’s genuinely exciting to explore. Plus, the characters are so diverse, it’s easy to get attached to them.
Now, if you’re one of those people who only watch Log Horizon because they hate SAO, be warned. Yes, Log Horizon differs from SAO and has better pacing, but it’s not the perfect masterpiece some make it out to be.
It’s still a little flawed, but that doesn’t stop it from being a good show that’s definitely worth your time.
7 The Saga of Tanya the Evil
It’s not your typical villain story because our main character Tanya is evil in a different way. She’s driven by success and self-preservation, no matter who gets hurt along the way. She can be straight-up malevolent sometimes, which is pretty entertaining to watch.
The Saga of Tanya the Evil follows Tanya, a ruthless soldier known as the “Devil of the Rhine,” Reincarnated as a little girl in a world of magical warfare, she rises through the ranks of her country’s military, and her ultimate goal is to defeat Being X.
The best part of this anime is Tanya’s character. She’s such a boss, whether she’s in a war scene or having a chat with her superiors. How often do you see an anime that’s just as good with dialogue as action?
It’s not a perfect show by any means. Tanya is what makes the show so enjoyable, and it’s up to each viewer to decide if they like her or not.
6 Overlord
You probably know the premise – getting stuck in a video game world. But this show takes it to the next level by making the protagonist an antagonist who enjoys being evil. And boy, does it deliver!
The world-building is top-notch, focusing on exploring the world’s different systems. The action scenes and comedy – they’re a perfect mix.
In Overlord, Momonga finds himself trapped in the virtual world of his favorite game after the servers shut down. With his powerful wizard abilities and loyal servants, he sets out to uncover the mystery of the new world and its inhabitants.
I was never bored through all four seasons – the story flows seamlessly and expands from a skeleton man with a vast labyrinth to claiming entire kingdoms under his name.
5 No Game No Life
The world in NGNL is so charming and deep, with intriguing politics and characters that keep the story moving forward. And the art style is just stunning! The bright colors and the red outlines make it stand out from other anime.
No Game No Life is set in Disboard, a world where everything is decided through games. Sora and Shiro are transported to Disboard by the One True God, Tet, and decide to help Stephanie Dola regain her father’s throne and revive the kingdom of Elkia.
The relationship between Sora and Shiro is just amazing! They’re inseparable and always have each other’s backs.
What I love most about NGNL is how it deconstructs game tropes while still managing to be a fantasy adventure. It pokes fun at cultures, rules, and clichés in the cleverest way possible.
I would recommend NGNL to anyone who loves anime, but keep in mind that it’s really short for the story it developed. And sadly, there doesn’t seem to be a second season in sight.
4 That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime
This show takes all the usual fantasy stuff and adds some unique twists to keep things interesting. The main character is a slime, and he is one cool dude. He’s cute, likable, and an all-around good guy.
Reincarnated as a slime after a fatal stabbing in Tokyo, 37-year-old Satoru Mikami discovers newfound abilities and befriends a sealed monster. Renamed Rimuru Tempest, he embarks on a new journey with the distinct goal of altering his fate.
It focuses on what it’s like to start a new life in a new world and how society evolves. And all the while, it’s just a fun anime to watch, with Rimuru’s cheerful and smart outlook on the world adding to the overall enjoyment.
So, if you want something light-hearted, relaxing, and creative, you should check out Slime.
3 Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation
Mushoku Tensei doesn’t throw the main character into an adventure right away. Instead, it takes time to build the world and the characters.
We follow Rudeus from infancy to childhood, and it’s fascinating to see how he adapts to the new world and learns about magic.
Mushoku Tensei follows the story of a 34-year-old recluse who gets transported to another world after a heroic attempt ends in tragedy. Reborn as Rudeus Greyrat, he quickly adapts to the new environment and starts displaying magical talent.
The show has some controversial themes, like sexual assault and slavery, that are not handled in the most appropriate way. And there are some perverted jokes that might not be everyone’s cup of tea.
But if you can look past that, you’ll find a fun and immersive adventure that will keep you entertained from beginning to end.
2 KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on this Wonderful World
If you’re looking for an anime that will lift your spirits and make you laugh, then KonoSuba is the perfect show for you. This anime throws all seriousness out the window and focuses on pure entertainment.
KonoSuba follows the adventures of Kazuma Satou, a high school student who dies a pathetic death only to be reincarnated in a fantasy world by the goddess Aqua, who turns out to be completely useless!
From Kazuma, the clever but talentless MC, to Aqua, the dumb goddess, and Megumin, the chuunibyou with actual powers, this group is comedy gold.
And let’s not forget about Darkness, the perverted masochist who is just…well, you’ll have to see for yourself! They take their tropes to the extreme, and it’s all part of what makes this show so darn funny.
1 Re:ZERO Starting Life in Another World
Re:ZERO blends dark psychological themes with a fantastical setting, and its works like a charm. Watching the MC spiral into despair and insanity as he keeps dying over and over again is both thrilling and heart-wrenching.
In Re:ZERO, Subaru is transported to a fantasy world after leaving a convenience store. Despite lacking special abilities or powers, he meets a beautiful half-elf Emilia who saves him from thugs and begins their journey together.
Emilia is gorgeous and kind, and I love that she’s not just there as some waifu material for Subaru to drool over. She’s a strong, independent character who can stand on her own two feet.
And then there’s Rem; she surprised me in the best way possible. She’s a more fleshed-out character than the main heroine herself.
So, for those of you who are tired of the same old isekai, give Re: ZERO a chance. You won’t regret it!
