The story revolves around Takashi Natsume, who was orphaned at a young age. He could always see youkai because of which he was isolated since childhood. He went from one place to another being an orphan. After the long ignorance by people, Natsume shuts himself out from others. 

He gets his grandmother Reiko Natsume’s book called The Book of friends with the names of the youkais she defeated. This gives him the power to summon the youkai from the book as he pleases. But Natsume is not a fan of power, so he decided to protect the book instead. As he moves forward, Madara joins him in the form of a cat after making a deal to protect him if he hands over the book after his death.

His actions don’t go unnoticed, and soon, he is punished for his deeds. Soon after, she leaves the school, and he starts getting bullied. Now filled with regret and guilt, he shuts himself away from everyone. 

He gets back in touch with Shouko and asks her to be his friend. The story hereafter shows the feelings that arise between the two and how he starts to open up to his world. Truly a masterpiece, this anime still lives in the hearts of everyone who has seen it.
