Konosuba is an isekai anime where Kazuma, like Re: Zero’s Subaru, is reincarnated into a fantasy world by an obnoxious princess, Aqua. However, he’s not your typical hero who saves the day, which makes him more relatable to us.

Like Subaru, he strives to survive in the fantasy world with Aqua by teaming up with  Megumin, a mage obsessed with explosions, and Darkness, as the name suggests, a masochistic crusader whose clumsy attacks make her a liability.

This dysfunctional group faces absurd challenges, from battling cabbages to confronting the demon king’s generals.

Their relationships, marked by banter, misunderstandings, and genuine camaraderie, resemble the dynamics in Re: Zero, creating a sense of belonging for the audience.

Tokyo Revengers became extremely popular in 2021. The series revolves around a time loop and follows the story of Takemichi, an ordinary man who has to survive the past to save his ex-girlfriend, Hinata.

Both anime revolves around the protagonist’s ability to revisit the past and alter events to prevent tragedies. In Tokyo Revengers, Takemichi travels back in time with a handshake with Naoto, similar to how Subaru resets through ‘Return by Death’ in Re: Zero.

Re: Zero and Tokyo Revengers heavily emphasize the protagonist’s bonds with friends and loved ones. In Tokyo Revengers, Takemichi’s relationships with Hinata and his friends parallel Subaru’s connections with Emilia, Rem, and others.

In Mushoku Tensei, Rudeus is a vulnerable and withdrawn NEET reincarnated in a fantasy world and given a chance for redemption. This time, he works on growing himself and begins his journey as a talented magic prodigy under the skilled mage Roxy Migurdia.

While Rudeus confronts his past regrets and strives to live more meaningfully, he makes new bonds to survive and become emotionally mature.

Erased is one of the best anime exploring the concept of time loops. Like Re: Zero, it features a time-loop mechanic and its profound consequences.

Subaru and Satoru’s protagonists are ordinary individuals thrust into life-or-death situations. They must confront external threats and internal struggles to protect those they care about.

Erased starts with a hook: Satoru’s mother gets murdered, and to save her, he gets transported 18 years into the past, where he has to find the killer to prevent the kidnapping of Kayo Hinazuki, as the killer is connected to the one who murdered his mother.

Although Berserk isn’t an isekai anime, it shares various common threads with Re: Zero, which makes it an engaging watch.

Both the protagonists, Guts and Subaru, have to endure intense physical and emotional hardships, which produce an inspiring story for viewers.

In Berserk, Guts is burdened by betrayal from all sides. The apostles massacred his friends, and to make matters worse, Griffith—once his closest ally—assaulted Casca, his love interest.

This ultimate betrayal left Guts emotionally and mentally shattered, and he went on a quest to seek revenge.

Grimgar, Ashes, and Illusions should be on your watchlist. It presents themes of loss, self-discovery through the harsh reality of being thrown into a new world, and the bonds formed through shared hardship, which resembles Re: Zero.

It’s engaging as each character confronts unique challenges:

  • Yume, the optimistic hunter, strives to improve her abilities;
  • Shihoru, the timid mage, battles with her lack of self-assurance;
  • Mogzo, the gentle warrior, evolves into a reliable guardian;
  • Ranta, the blunt and hot-headed dark knight, brings conflict and light to the group.

You should watch The Rising of the Shield Hero next. The protagonist, Naofumi Iwatani, resembles Subaru from Re: Zero. Both are average individuals transported into another world.

Their luck is strikingly similar and unfortunate: Naofumi is falsely accused and ostracized by society, while Subaru is dismissed as useless and must struggle to earn trust. Naofumi’s bond with Raphtalia mirrors Subaru’s relationships with Emilia and Rem.

In both anime series, these strong female leads form deep emotional bonds with the protagonists, linking the two anime through their themes of trust, loyalty, and growth.
