A mysterious virus has turned humans into flesh-eating monsters called kabane. These monsters have pushed humanity to build humongous walls to protect themselves.

The only way to kill kabane(s) is to pierce their steel-coated hearts, thus the heavily armored trains capable of killing kabane. Ikoma is one of such technicians maintaining these trains. He wishes to fight on the frontlines against Kabane with his new weapon, and fate grants his wish sooner than expected.
