As a true blue otaku, I often find it hard to decide which of my cultured interests I should dedicate my limited time to. Is it anime? or is it gaming? This question has plagued not just me but thousands out there.
But then again, is there a need to decide? When you are stuck in this dilemma, I have just the medicine for you. What if anime and gaming didn’t have to be separate things? Such a list has been curated by yours truly, just for you.
10 Recovery Of An MMO Junkie
Moriko Moroika is our 30-year old protagonist. The story starts with her quitting her job and becoming a complete NEET shut-in. She has no hopes to re enter the society, but all of a sudden she finds hope in her online friends.
Recovery of an MMO Junkie is a relatable tale for all gamers. The over indulgence in virtual reality makes the colors of the world look dull. It is a splendid tale about using games to grasp reality.
9 Good Night World
Good Night World is a unique game anime in which a family of gamers play a game called Planet. They are all happier in Planet than they are with their family in real life. But ironically, they meet online and make a family that is far happier there.
None of them are aware of each other’s identities online. The anime takes interesting turns as events from the real and virtual worlds start to collide.
8 New Game!
A unique part of our list, New Game! is an anime about making a game. It gets a spot on this list not only due to the intense involvement of gaming-related terms but also because of the way game development is showcased.
It is a slice-of-life anime that colorfully shows how game creators design and make a world independently. Each cast has their specialties and works together to create something millions would enjoy.
7 Baka and Test
Baka and Test is a splendid high school comedy show that is a must watch, even if you didn’t see it on this list. It revolves around a host of characters in an elitist school that is remniscent of society itself. The main character Yoshii is pretty dumb but has a good heart.
The story revolves around the F class, the lowest of the low, trying to use their abilities to battle it out in the Summoning test (they fight using chibi versions), and it depends on their marks in tests. The anime is unique and the development of the plot is great as well.
6 BOFURI: I Don’t Want To Get Hurt, So I’ll Max Out My Defense
Kaede Honju, our protagonist, is a very rare type of gamer. She is afraid, beyond words, that she will get hurt. So she does what any sane person would- she starts maxing her defense. Such a unique build makes her unkillable and involves her in multiple special events.
Unlike most anime that showcase the ‘pro’ gamers just owning everybody, this anime is about a normal person who is new to gaming, and how they perceive the game and the difference in outlooks. Overall, Bofuri is both charming and cute.
5 Loving Yamada At Level 999
What happens when you fall for someone who lives in a different world? Not literally, but our main character Akane falls for Yamada, a calm and composed gamer, who essentially cares for only the gaming world.
The anime is about Akane entering his world to reach out to him and connect with him to make him fall for her. The story is a delightful tale about spending time together and discovering each other, albeit in a game.
4 The King’s Avatar
Most anime are Japanese, but once in a while, Chinese anime shine like bright gems. The King’s Avatar is one of them. The story is about Ye Xiu, a person who stood at the peak of the gaming world in a game called Glory. But due to reasons and his age, he was pulled off his pro team.
The story is about Ye Xiu proving that he is not done yet. It is a tale about starting over and rising up to the ranks of the unrivaled once again. Heavily focused on gaming, the anime has various game words and references that only gamers would get.
3 Log Horizon
One of the OG Isekai anime to have game-elements, log Horizon has inspired multiple creations after it. The story is rooted in transmigration into a game world, but the catch is, you cant die. You respawn every time you do.
Log Horizon is a wonderful tale about working together to strategize, defeat Bosses, and clean the game. It is a dream come true for any gamer, and the utility of characters, classes, items, and even the mechanics all remind us very much of actual games.
2 Sword Art Online
If we talk about an anime that introduced the peak of the isekai game genre, it would definitely be this masterpiece. Started as a light novel, Sword Art Online won the hearts of millions with its excellent world-building, game elements, and emotional scenes.
This anime has it all, large-scale battles, guilds, an OP protagonist, a beautiful female lead, and, to add to it all, a terrifying plot twist. SAO is a watch for any gamer and makes us wish for the future to arrive sooner.
1 No Game, No Life
The top of our list is No Game, No Life. This anime only ahs a single season as of yet, but each episode is packed with emotional upheavals and a lot of amazing wit. The protagonists are Sora and Shiro, siblings who are unrivaled at games in the real world.
They get to go to another world, a world of games and rules. Like fish in water, Sora and Shiro quickly acclimate themselves and slowly climb up the ranks in that world, dictating nations’ fate with a single game. The potential of the anime is great as well, and it is something every gamer dreams about.
