The Sopranos’ Writer Talks about the Fate of Tony Soprano

Tony’s fate in Sopranos has been a thing of debate for generations. After what seems like a million years, show writer Terence Winter has finally opened up about what happened to him after the screen blacked out.

Created by David Chase, the epic HBO criminal drama revolves around the Sopranos family trying to balance criminal and family lives.

Boasting an ensemble cast led by the late James Gandolfini, Edie Falco, Michael Imperioli, and Tony Sirico, the show is hailed as one of the best crime dramas ever made.

In a recent interview with MovieMaker, Terence Winter shared his thoughts on the ending of Sopranos. When asked about Tony’s fate, the writer gave his opinion, which was ambiguous, to say the least. He said that he thinks Tony died soon after the show ended.

See what Winter had to say:

I wasn’t aware that David said that. I always thought that if he didn’t die that night, certainly, that’s kind of his legacy. At some point in this guy’s life, somebody’s going to come out of a bathroom or a doorway, and it’s going to be over. That’s the message that I took away. When you live that life, and when you’re Tony Soprano, even going out for ice cream with your family is fraught with danger. You’re always looking over your shoulder, you’re always suspicious of people. “Who’s that guy? Why is that guy looking at me?” It’s that self-imposed hell that he created for himself because of his life.

The ending of Sopranos remains one of the most ambiguous endings in television history. The screen cuts to black as soon as Tony looks at the entrance, waiting for his daughter’s arrival.

The open-ended scene created a lot of speculation among the fans. Some suggest a happy ending, saying that the family starts to mend its differences after that.

But, the majority of the theories point towards a near-future demise of Tony. Some suggest a heart attack, while others say a hitman shot him dead.

Much like Carpenter, director David Chase has been silent about the ending for ages. Recently, during the promotions of The Many Saints of Newark, fans believed that he gave an actual answer that confirmed Tony’s death.

Chase described the show’s final scene as Tony heading to a meeting where he would ‘get it’.

However, Chase followed it up with a blunt reply saying that he never suggested anything of that sort.

However, many fans feel it is better not to have a concrete answer regarding the show’s ending. The debate regarding the end helps the show remain fresh in the memory. It helps everyone think they are right and is suitable for all theorists. That’s a fitting end for one of the best shows of all time!

Sopranos is available for streaming right now on HBO Max.
