Warner Bros. has announced that “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” will get a prequel film, featuring the origin story of Willy Wonka (the famous confectioner from Roald Dahl’s book).
Collider reports that the studio has confirmed the release date to be sometime in March 2023 and has been eyeing Tom Holland and Timothee Chalamet for the famed confectioner’s role.
Tom Holland and Timothee Chalamet are both in their mid-20s and are two of the most popular and talented actors of their generation. While Warner Bros. hasn’t offered the role to either of them, they have certainly considering the young actors for it.
The 1971 film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is based on the book written by Roald Dahl. Before the film had released, Willy Wonka was already a famous character. Despite being disliked by Dahl himself, the live-action film is one of the most iconic films from that era.
The film made Willy Wonka into something of an icon. The character was even popular decades later when Johnny Depp played Wonka in a (relatively less popular) 2005 remake.
Warner Bros. will revive the character yet again, and there is a good chance that we will get to see Tom Holland or Timothee Chalamet in the role. But casting the actors might be the least of their concerns regarding the film.
The earlier versions of the book have a racial issue as it addresses the “Oompah Loompahs” working in Wonka’s factory as the “African pygmies” who were “discovered” (a rather odd word to use) by Wonka and were made to work in his factory.
Even after making the necessary alterations, the issue of racism remained the same. Of course, there is a possibility that we will not see the Oompah Loompas in the 2023 Wonks at all, with it being set in a time before Willy Wonka founded his legendary chocolate factory.
